This week I can get a gobbler for 39 to 79 cents a pound, or even for free if I were to spend $100 at one store. Compare that with the $4.99-a-pound cost for the "heritage" (exotic breed) turkeys featured

re: Turkey dinner for just $189 a plate

I agree that the average American is looking for a way to stretch a buck. I mean, who really has enought to spend $189 on dinner for ONE?! But big box stores are not the way to go! They advertise really well. What goes on in the background? They price check their competitor. Then they raise his price as much as they think they can. This is where the advertising comes in. People see this part: "Wal-Mart has [Item A] for [Price A]!" Average Joe says "Wow! That's cheap! I've got to go get some!" He proceeds to buy Item A plus several other little things he saw on the aisles. Comparison Shopper sees ad, checks out Local Grocer vs. Wal-Mart. Perhaps Item A is a few cents cheaper, (though its doubtful) but Items B, C, and D are 10-20% higher. Comparison Shopper shops Local Grocer and really saves!

Spending that kind of money to show just how much money you can throw away. Look, if you want to waste money fine. Not me!!! I married a doctor who when shopping for groceries would just grab this and grab that because he didn't have to worry about money. I was a single parent that did not receive child support (another story) and was able to feed my son well. Not because I made a lot of money but as stated before "a good cook can make any cut of meat or any type of grain into a fabulous meal". This will always hold true. I have now taught my husband about how much money can be saved by comparison shopping and using coupons. He is amazed. All that money saved??? It goes into my stock account to and I invest it. Stop spending money on fru fru high nosed bull. We give a lot to the needy because they are our neighbors and I will be looking for the best deal on my Thanksgiving turkey!!

The guy is running a business and he has to distinguish his customer base. It got your attention. I am not a fan of the homeless. I am not interested in feeding them or cultivating more of them. Ok, I don't like bums. But what I don't understand is why every Thanksgiving overstuffed fat Americans have to share their guilt by somehow incorporating the homeless in each bite of their food. The last thing I want to talk about on Thanksgiving is some street urchin with scabies. Just once I would like to sit down with friends and family and not have to turn on the news and see bums eating thanksgiving dinner hosted by Hillary Clinton stretching the seams of her pant suit, sitting amongst the riff raft. You can tell she hates it; look at the expression on her face. As for me, I will go for the $189 dollar turkey dinner if only to enjoy one Thanksgiving without bums. Did the Pilgrims parade out the bums on the first Thanksgiving? No! Becasue they had a pretty good rule back then. You don't work and you don't eat.

My problem with the article is in the second half. everyone has different priorities. Some people buy cars, some people by electronics, and yes some people by food, wether it be organic or be prepared by a top chef. if that is there splurge who are we to say it is wrong. As for the people that pay the higher price for food they are the ones making a statement. they are willing to pay for a free range chicken vs a mass produced one. They are will to pay more at the mom and pop store who pay there clerks a fair wage. Yes $189 for a dinner is a bit much for me and a lot of other people, but for some it is well woth it.

I'm not rich - not by american standards - but earn a decent living, contribute to my community and different charities. We live alone with my husband and have no familly to share that holiday with . So why not treat ourselves with a fabulous diner?

We eat organic all the time because I've seen the results of industrial farming on our earth, and we believe it's important to support those who don't trash our planet.

So yes, we could support a restaurant that share that philosophy.

I understand why some people have not that opportunity, but I arrived in this country as a very poor immigrant, and I just worked harder , longer hours ... and yes, I began with minimum wage, but everybody can work harder and earn more money !

Its who you share it with and understanding that happiness doesn't come from a$189 meal or a wal mart bird, but from love shared that day, and its who you share it with. There are people who are very fortunate in this country let them share the wealth. Next year their circumstances could be different!

This socialist BS that they should share, or help the less fortunate, complete with Bible passages is too much! If those with money choose to share that's great. If they choose to be "greedy and selfish", that's great too (remember their spending does help the economy, probably keeping many of you employed).

BTW, I am not well-off, but my husband and I are working towards it. We don't expect to build wealth any other way.
