I'm also looking for ways to cut costs. Cardboard works (especially the type from coffee cup trays and egg cartons). After all, some of the litters ARE paper!

A good way to supplement this is to be a mystery shopper at a pet supply store.

Bear in mind that some cats are extremely fussy about their litter. Mine aren't, luckily.

Do you have a home made Wheat Recipe? Like the Swheat stuff? I have 5 cats and with the Swheat costing $10.49+ for only about 25lbs I need something better. I've been using the Petsmart brand of 40lb cat litter for $12.99 and that lasts me a bit longer then 35 lbs. Suggestions there has to be a way to make that via going to the bulk section of the fruit market...?

I hate the smell of kitty liter once the cat has urinated on it. It's so acidic smelling it burns the nose. I moved the cat box outside and made sure to rake up one particular flower bed (that holds container plants), with fresh dirt once a month. The cats prefer the dirt and no more smelling up of the house! they also stay out of the neighbor's yards with their digging. I do not purchase cat liter except in the winter when the cats tend to stay indoors most of the day and I purchase the bags at Wal-Mart for $1.99. Cats can use the outside yard for all I care since there is a designated flower bed/cat box area set aside just for them.

I have 15 house cats & spend a great deal of time cleaning litter boxes. I do not have time to make litter with that newspaper procedure. I only purchase the sand/clumping kind and it is very expensive. When we raised horses and had barn cats they would use the wood shavings we put down in the horses stalls so the sawdust wood be good if I were close to a mill.

Thanks for a great idea to help me stop using store bought kitty litter. It is not about time management, it is about reducing waste and harming the environment.

i have 2 cats and i am tired of spending money left and right!!! just to get some sort of cat litter!! i have tried all the kinds of brands of cat litter and not one clumps right!!! i think i might try it out and the saw dust is a great idea to i also put my cats litter box some where that they can find it like in a corner or something decent. you know i cant wait to try it out!!! i am going right NOW!!! i already have my shopping list ready to try the homemade cat litter!!! i well post back to tell yall what i thjing tell then bye!!!

I live on the ocean and heat with a wood stove using wood washd up from the ocean. A chain saw cuts up the wood and I use the sawdust created from the chain saw cuttings for the cat litter box - Were I not using that I would be using dryed sand from the sea shore.
