The idea that one might charge for the use of the restroom on a plane might discourage terrorists from mixing explosive chemicals in the restrooms because as we read this article today, this timely comment might just have been made to place an element of doubt in those who might have plans to bomb a plane.....not knowing what other airlines might do or not do.........I for one do not believe that the Air France plane flew threw a wall of thunderstorms at 35000 feet....they go around them.......will wait and see before I fly anywhere soon.

US store rules and the NTSB are not relevant here - it's a European airline, based in Ireland, and has no flights to the US. I've read somewhere else that the CEO is serious about this, and has asked Boeing to work on doors to allow charging for the toilets (they are exclusively a 737 airline, I believe). Nothing would surprise me with this CEO or this airline, and I don't mean that as a compliment. This is a CHEAP airline, and you get what you pay for.

in other words, we should be able to get a pillow, blanket, "the good headphones", a movie, alcoholic beverages and non-alcoholic beverages for free! Oh and be able to use the restroom for free also!

With airfares so outrageously high, passengers should not have to pay for anything extra at all!!

If they want me to start paying to use their bathroom (i dont think they can do that because they have an obligation BY LAW to make sure their customers have the "tools" they need to stay "safe". If they want me to pay for using the bathroom i think i relieve myself on the floor (and then wrap it up in a bag so no one else can small it : )

I deal with the airlines where it hurts... I quit flying! Between nasty gate agents, surly tsa, dirty planes, bad maintenance, tight seats, dirty restrooms, snapping stewardesses, goofy fees, ad nauseaum.. they don't deserve to be in existance. We just drive and enjoy it (and have our own car when we get there). The glory days of airline travel are gone.

This is unlikely to catch on in the USA; it's more likely to be acceptable in the UK or France where there are already a whole range of contexts in which toilets are not "free."

But UK, France, or USA, wherever, this is just another example of the trend toward separating ALL the various services from the basic one of being transported from point A to point B. Once upon a time, even alcohol on domestic flights was free. That started slipping away in the 1990s. Right around 9-11 I recall that meals on 3-4 hour domestic flights were phased out in lieu of "lunch boxes" that you have to pay $5-6 for. Headphones are now sold-- rather than lent-- on most domestic flights. All of this enables airlines to charge the lowest possible price compatible with profit for the basic flight, and then let people decide whether or not they want the extra "service."

But just for fun: what do you suppose would happen if you told a flight attendant "I AM going to urinate (or worse!); I can't help it; and NO, I don't have 50 cents on me. Whether or not you let me into the bathroom or not is up to you, but you're not going to stop my biological process"? If you're willing to engage in brinksmanship, the urinator (or worse) has a certain leverage that, say, the person who would like to watch the movie or eat a sandwich just simply doesn't have.

What am I talking about? Probably they make you give a credit card number in advance, or you don't get on the plane.

This is rediculos as "going" to the bathroom is a human function for everyone and airlines, buses, trains, etc have to provide for that human need. I should think it would get pretty rowdy in a "tube" if some hot headed passengers protest and di thier bussiness right on the floor, if you think that would not happen, think again.

I also feel "Water" should be given out for free as weel even if is just by the glass as peopel need to take medications with water when traveling or when one has a coughing spell. If you have to pay for water when you are coughing and cany think straight it is a pretty sad world if it comes to that.
