I knew a woman in college who men lusted after and women envied because of the way she projected herself as being something of a red haired fetish goddess artist type. She confessed to me that she had the habit of stealing things to enhance her image. She also had at least one sugar daddy who paid her in luxury goods in exchange for services rendered as his dominatrix. Oh the humiliation we go through to acquire our "things".

re: Pay down debt, reclaim your life in 2008

You name it, I'm living every horrid nightmare of the current depression. In Michigan, yes it is a depression. Went out on a limb to secure investment property and was a hair away from signing a deal with the likes of Toll Brothers that would of been my retirement. Of course, the economy started the downward spiral, Toll brothers balked and then ended up leaving Michigan pretty much altogether. Then my good paying job evaporated, almost lost the house and have tons of debt I've been fighting to pay down. I'd have to say Litton Loan was a bright light compared to any oter banks that my friends have been trying to deal with, they actually constructively worked to help me save my house. As for the credit card companies and collection agencies? All liars, and crooks as far as you can see. As I wade through their trash it has been fun to pit themselves against themselves, as I tape everything and you can ALWAYS catch them in doubletalk and even threats, which of course is very illegal and I am going after some of them because of this. (the turnover rate is extremely high on these scum, only a few have no integrity enough to be a bill collector for long.) And remember, they are using all these tactics on a guy that actually is trying to pay down what is owed!! To me it is truly amazing that their are "laws" that allow them to charge the interest they do, change terms on any whim they see fit-uterly amazing. I was very close to selling what I had left and leaving the country for a time when all this crap was coming down and it seemed futile. Still is very tough, and it takes much not to want to go visit these card and collection headquarters personally, if you know what I mean. For those going through tough times right now, I suggest reading all you can about your rights, and tape conversations with these scum if one party taping is legal in your state to catch them threatening or harrassing you. Things I did to limit their power-sell off everything you don't need(which helps pay down things too), put cars and such in other people's names and you insure them and "rent" them from that person, get rental space and store anything of value(tools, rv's, snowmobiles, anything that they might show up to collect etc. that doesn't need to be at your residence. Even my TV is my friends', so that if they decide to get nasty and try and collect anything while I'm in the process of paying back(which they can do and it's hard to keep track of filings at you r local court, and they know it) if they collect anything using the Sherriff they will be committing larceny!! Remember, they have to prove title to whatever they take before they take it, just 'cause it's there doesn't mean it's your's. Hope this helps the poor good souls that just have had luck turn away for a time.

re: Pay down debt, reclaim your life in 2008

With our country in a debt crisis (average household with over $9000 in credit card debt) which has created a savings crisis (a negative 1.1% savings rate). Its good to hear people thinking about paying off their debts, if I had only been taught about the evils of credit cards as a youngster, I would have been retired at 40. Its never too late to get out of debt, the sooner you start the sooner you will reap the rewards of a debt free life. Get in touch with a Primerica rep, you will find it very Enlightening.

In 1983 I got $1200 back on my income taxes and with a friends advice I divided that amount by 52 the number of payperiods I had and then started putting $25 a week in the credit union through payroll deductions. I also decreased my income tax payment to the IRS by $25 week by filling out a new W-2. By the time Christmas rolled around I paid for all my shopping with cash and the following year never had a bill I couldn't pay with my savings. I don't get an income tax refund and I'm happy not to. By the third year I doubled my weekly savings and now 25 years later I save 8 times that amount every week and use this account for paying all the big bills. You can do it, just stop letting the IRS use your money for the next 12 months and use it yourself.

I have managed to keep my credit card debt down to a minimum over the past few years while paying off a mortgage. It would be nice to know that I will have some years where I will be financially stable and not have to worry as I am moving towards the end of my working life.
