Wow, I totally wrote about this last week too in my blog, because it is a concern! I finally tossed out my sharper image gift card a few months back. I am a fan of the Visa/American Express gift cards, except there's always a fee with those. I recommend Amazon.com and mall gift certificates...

Another interesting fall-out is that many people may turn to gift cards sponsored by VISA and Mastercard. These cards can be used anywhere VISA and Mastercard are accepted.

The only problem with these gift cards is that they cost money to actually buy the gift card in addition to the money actually put on the card. These VISA/Mastercard gift cards often start adding inactivity fees which are deducted monthly from the gift card itself if the person who receives the card doesn't use it within a certain amount of time. Always read the fine "mouseprint" before purchasing the cards.
