A good one i did once was to send her the usual Christmas card and inside i add that i have subscribed her to an emailed joke on the 1st of each month for the next 12 months. At the beginning of each month i emailed her a new joke. This is a multi purpose gift, 1st and foremost the gift of laughter once a month is a precious gift, 2nd it made her overcome her techno fear and use her compute/emails much more and 3rd it didn’t cost a penny!

I think homemade gifts are fantastic. My Grandma used to give me a jar of her homemade apple butter. She was a great woman. I have given crocheted scarfs and afghans and always have other people asking me to make them one. Gifts given with love mean so much more than store bought junk.

Elizabeth's Mom - Creating CDs and photocopying library pages is only illegal if you plan to make a profit from the recreation of the item.

Giving these items as a Christmas gift is harmless. I'm sure if you received such a gift (esp. from a child or student), you wouldn't lecture the giver about "copyright violations".

I know my favorite gift in recent years (possibly ever) was a copy of my great-grand fathers cook book. My great-grandfather was an AMAZING cook, he passed away my senior year of high school. I still rememeber trying new recipies he found/ created. A few years ago my aunt borrowed his recipee collection frommy grand mother and spent all year typing up the recipees. For christmas she went to kinkos and printed out a copy for each of us and put it in a simple three ring binder with a picutre of him on the cover. probably cost less than $10 each, but it is truly a treasure. Now i can recreate my favorite dishes (though it never turns out quite the same lol) when ever I want. I have even started adding my own recipees to the binder. It gets used more than all the other cookbooks i own combined.

Some people don't like handmade gifts. Evidently J6P is one of them. I usually enjoy them. My best friend gave us a cross stitch birth sampler when our daughter was born and an anniversary sampler for our 25th anniverary. I treasure them both. I have given homemade breads as teacher gifts an usually get requests for recipes. I have also given hand knit afghans and scarves and cross stitch gifts. I think Joe is in the minority. What do the rest of you say?

I agree with Charlie - paylessfofood.

I love getting handmade gifts because they mean so much more. They are from the heart. It doesn't matter how poorly or well made they are. I have a boxfull of crayon drawing that I cherish.

I have a brick covered with felt and pictures of the person who made it on the top. It is now ten years old and getting a little seedy, but I still love it.

I am an artist and every year I make something special for them for Christmas. They now have a household full of hand painted items. This year they are getting Jumping jacks wild ly dressed with their faces on them. I laugh everytime I finish one.

As far as Leanne's idea is concerned - "I have a friend ... who compiles a mixed CD every year and mails them out to all his friends." - not a good idea--"bootlegging" is illegal. (copyright violation)

I believe this also applies to photocopying library book pages, but I'm not positive.
