We bet it never occurred to you that your boss may already know that you're looking for another one. That could be the case if you're using an online service like Monster

re: Looking for a new job? When I began looking for a new job after I finished Bachelor's last year, I was cautious, not letting anyone know that I was looking. I listed the HR person as the contact for my office, and to my astonishment, my supervisor was fielding the calls for employment verification instead of the HR person. This has led to my boss "chatting" with future employers about my abilities and my work ethic. Somehow, I have not had a single job offer even though my supervisor supposedly had great things to say about me. Just exercise caution. I now have a close friend at work listed as the contact for employment verification and my resume is not posted anywhere online. To my knowledge, the only thing your employer is allowed to do is to verify if you have ever been employed there. Naturally, things have been quite unpleasant for me there since. USE CAUTION!

Is kind of like letting your bankrupt pals at your spotless credit rating. A bad idea. Oh I know how they can monitor that internet traffic. Makes me surprised there are still Cyber Mondays around

I think most employees would be shocked to see how easy it is to monitor what they are doing at work. I had a student who lost his job over his internet activities on the clock.
