I’ve been setting aside ones and fives toward the goal of having cash on hand for emergencies. Some Smart Spending message board readers do this, too. Don't hurt to have fishing & hunting equipment if food runs short. Don't bother buying a propane stove, just use your Bar B Q grill to cook on. Don't know anyone that doesn't keep an extra tank filled and on hand.

A passport isn't a bad idea, just in case the whole mess goes to hell in a hand basket.

Like Boy Scouts, one needs to be prepared!

As the fire broke out, the husband lost all rational sense and was trying to get back into the apt to retrieve same which of course the firemen would not let him as flames were shooting out, etc. After the fire was extinguished he did manage to recoup about 1,500 total which I believe was in the freezer. One additional suggestion to consider is instead of having three months of cash for expenses in a bank in case of emergencies, (when possible) why not work towards a goal of paying three months worth of expenses in advance? Most, but not all companies/creditors will advance your due date for each payment made. In the process more money gets circulated into general distribution of this country vs. sitting in a bank which may or may not fail. I have seen people do this, and ask (especially lately) about doing this with their rent, car payments, credit card auto payments, etc. and it is an idea to consider.

Yes, I've been attempting to prepare emergency kits for my family. They think I'm dumb too! Well, I'm going to go all out and make sure we're ready for anything.

This has been one of the best posts I've read in some time. Most of you all sound like good people and that makes me feel better.

Thanks!

It ended up saving me $50 one day when a local company tried to pull what I consider to be a scam. We had concrete delivered for work in our yard. They won't tell you the exact price until they get there, then proceeded to tell me they don't take credit cards and charge a $50 for a check. And they don't make change if you pay cash. Our bill was some odd amount like $452.26 and the concrete delivery guy had the nerve to tell me that when people pay cash, he keeps the extra as a tip! Well I ruined his day by going in the house and getting the amount, to the penny. He looked at my like I was nuts but pig would fly before I'd give my hard-earned money to a company with those types of business tactics.
