My major is international studies and I am looking into being part of this program for a long time now. I am actually going to start volunteering at the Phoenix Baptist Hospital soon. I know that I feel that there are other places that my help wold be needed but every one needs help sometime. I know that I am not getting any money for doing this, but I am getting so much in return...The reason is because I am gainging so kind of experience which I never had and offering free service, but I am really going to be looking into the other charity places that you mentioned especially the adult litercy program. Thank you so mcuh for your words of inspiration.

I gave 10% when we only earned 12k a yr with 2 kids, and we give 10+% now that we earn 500K a yr and with 4 kids. We donated 52K this year and I feel humbled beyond belief that we've been so blessed that we *can* donate that much. But, I felt humbled that we could manage to donate $1200 when we only earned $12K a yr also. I know it can be overwhelming to see all of the need around us. We, as a family, pick a few things we feel strongly about and focus there. My children get a voice too. This year, we focused on a homeless shelter for pregnant mothers, a church fund for the needy, and my children also picked the Humane Society. My children have the biggest hearts. When asked by their G-ma what they wanted for Christmas, they asked her to donate $$ to St Jude's Children's Hospital in their names. How many 12, 9, and 4 yr olds do you know that would ask for that? If my family could leave any legacy in this world, I hope that it's a legacy of compassion and giving hearts.

Thankfully, most of us do not suffer "compassion fatigue", like "Patty".

I could understand feeling overwhelmed and helpless sometimes by the number of people, animals in need of help and good deeds, but always feel like I'd love to be able to do more. I currently give approximately 10% in cold hard cash, of my annual salary - which is only $65,000.

My parents taught me "There, but for the Grace of God, go I"...

re: How to give even when you're broke

Hey Patty (page 1)- The reason charity exists is because at times taxes and other obligations outside of children and mortgage payments take every cent a person has and we can't afford food. Take it from a starving student, there IS a real and true need for communities to work together to help each other survive.

Or for those of us with children- think of it this way. When you were young (3-10) and everybody around you was chattering exicetedly about Christmas and getting toys, weren't you happy to participate and wonder yourself? Some children don't have even that small hope because they're all too aware that mommy and daddy can't make rent this year so their gift is the house and supper. Giving that one child a gently used bear can make his entire year- we give time money and support to the best of our abilities because showing even a little love goes a long way. It saves lives, as you do each time you donate blood and it makes a BIG difference to those who are forced to recieve instead of give. Besides, I'll bet if you took a poll those less fortunate could tell you that they try and do their part to give back. I also give blood and buy a homeless person a meal whenever I can, even if it's tough to feed myself some days.

The goverment has nothing to do with human compassion and love. This isn't an attack, all I'm saying is take heart- the good things you do for the community and others help and it's not a scam. If you need more proof the next time you see a young homeless person, offer them food and see the smile you'll get back. That's not the media- that's the real deal, from them to you.

Its not that I won't volunteer but rather where are those different needs people have beyond some of the common known organizations. There has to be some way of knowing what is out there. It would be a good thing to have a centeralized call center or someother way of letting us wanabe volunteers some choices. Churches are informed of needs but they too have available personnel. Maybe our local daily newspaper, but how would they go about not idenifying and possible embarrasing people. Any suggestions?

I use mine until they are worn out Also, turning in cans at "can banks" can generate a little cash to help the poor.

Nursing home residents appreciate someone who can even just visit once a month, to talk with them, read, write a letter, etc. I used to be a Social Worker in a nursing home, and I have a granddaughter who is a resident now, with a traumatic brain injury. You should see the joy on her face when she has a visitor. Happy Holidays!
