Hey WD, I'm advocating emulating the government's behavior...that's my point. I'm at all for BAILOUTS every other time someone is in trouble. Having been there myself and personally experiencing homelessness at one time in my life, I truly understand hard work and getting "it" back together. Today, I'm an educated man with a family, savings, a new custom home (not a McMansion), and my wife drives a newer car. My car is 18 years old and along the road of life, I took a course on automotive repair through (Penn and Foster) and so I do my own work. Our family lives on ONE income, because we are not into the daycare/public school thing, and we do just fine. It's amazing, actually. We've been on one modest income (I make less than 50 a year) for 10 years and the bottom-line is...little to no debt.

Any way, my 2 pennies.

I think everyone is a touch off base with their posts. We need to first understand what is causing the high price of vehicles of which there are many. One of the major players is the union...the same instution that promotes lazy American workers. These people complain about how their over inflated salaries are still not enough and complain about how they can't do things that "are not their job." These people can care less about the company they work for or about anything else for that matter. They are the first ones to complain about American jobs going to other countries. I say this; can you blame a company that is in business to make a PROFIT for taking operations to a location that allows them to do so!? I think we should start looking at manufacturing costs that are passed along in costs of goods as part of the problem as well. Maybe America should go "on strike" against lazy american workers complaining because they are getting time and a half or more for reading newspapers. By the way, I have spent much time in automotive factories and seen this mentality and behavior first-hand. It is rediculous and needs to be adressed before we go blaming lending institutions or anything of the sort. WE ARE DOING THIS TO OURSELVES!

American Car....you want us to have a "save" mentality in America when our government spends billions of dollars it doesn't have? Besides, everybody who collapses or goes under gets bailed out in this country anyway. When the government allows an airline to go bankrupt and disappear, then I'll be impressed.

People could save hundreds of dollars by not buying the latest and greatest in technology or, in this case, cars/trucks/SUVs. We need to have a "save" mentality here in America...and, unfortunately, most of us do not. I'm amazed at how many people slave away in the rat race just to make a mortgage or car payment. How about pay stuff off and don't get back into debt? Then you don't have to be a slave to debt or a job you can't stand. Leasing is good (have done it twice), but there are plenty of drawbacks, so be careful.

Megan, I disagree, people set themselves up for failure. Banks and "the system" just make it easier to do it. I could have bought a better and bigger car by leasing, but I bought a small car with payments I could live with and now my car is paid off.

I agree with "21" on this one. For years all the bragging and gloating has been done by people who made poor financial decisions. It's time for those who made good decisions to enjoy the fact they were right all along. Personally I think it's better all around to accept a bad choice has been made and take steps to correct it even if someone else "gloating" is "salt in the wound". It's tough, it may be humiliating but maybe they won't make the same mistake twice. What's the other option? Bailing out stupid consumers? Maybe banks share part of the blame but it's time for people to wake up and recognize their mistakes as well.

@ Hunter--you did not read me correctly. I did not say that banks "made" anyone go into debt. What I did say was that banks are certainly part of the problem.

Hopefully, this credit crisis will enlighten the average consumer about the potential dangers of using as much loan, mortgage, etc. as their banks approve for them.

And the gloating and pridefulness I was talking about? You, sir, have epitomized it with your sarcastic remarks.

Megan you are correct "those evil banks and other lending institutions made us go into debt" I had one banker hold a gun to my head and made me take out a loan. Another held my family hostage until I finished the application. I had no choice in the matter. If you think I am talking down to you YES I AM. What would Dave Ramsey say?

I don't mind the gloating. It's no worse than the bragging a lot of the borrowers were doing within the past few years about the new, expensive purchases/cars/homes that they overextended themselves to get.
