That's because the City Council voted 6-1 to institute a fee for the use of paper or plastic bags at grocery, drug and convenience stores. If that doesn't get people to start

re: Paper or plastic? Europeans are used to bring their b asket, stringbags, cotton bags etc. to the grocery store and nobody is upset about this. Recycling is the thing.

What I think I'll do now is bring in my own bags even if they have someone elses' logo on them (slowing down the check out line while I pack 385.00 a week average in those bags), or I'll have them put everything into my cart the same way I did before the checkout and load them into my car with my own bags. Perhaps they'll be a bit confused whether or not I paid for those items and this may become a problem for the stores?

This law is about the money and does not have any 'cap' on it as our small grocery store has just proved and it's not just Seattle.

re: Paper or plastic? It will be passed onto you and the other residents in the form of higher fees and taxes. Is it still "smart spending"?

Our local food market started to accept the bags for recycling and to reduce you bill by two cents per bag.

I started by purchasing just two green shopping bags... now to remember to carry them into the market.

I have four reusable bags from Trader Joes and one reusable freezer bag. In the year-plus I've been shopping for our family of four with them, I have yet to need more than that.

It's second nature now, but for a while I forgot the bags about half the time I shopped. And I was keeping them in the car! I tend to use the bags for shopping beyond the grocery store as well now.

wrt the dog poop issue -- why not use generic foldable sandwich baggies. Also, the bags that previously held the produce may work.

So if you take 5 bags with you they credit your bill 25 cents. I prefer this approach.

Come on! It was a convenience provided by the store, not a necessity. If you have so much of an issue with bringing your own sack or box to carry groceries in, then pay the fee for the plastic bags. If you have an issue with using the biodegradable utensils, bring your own flatware. I'm sure that those products will be bound to improve over time as well, as they are still relatively new. We've gotten so hung up on convenience as a society that we feel that we are entitled to it now, and we're learning that in a lot of ways making some things easier for us is causing some serious repercussions. Do we want our grandchildren growing up in a world full of our garbage? That's exactly what we're leaving them.
