Donna - You did what you felt was right and that's the most important thing. Everyone has to come to their own decision on this issue. I don't feel right giving cash to beggars - the reality is that many of them are addicts and I want my money to be a blessing not a curse. If I'm going to give cash I'd rather give to an organization that can give them real help, not just enable their problem.

I was acquainted with some homeless people near my home. They did have drinking / drug/ problem but they were always very kind to me and gave ME gifts. I tried to help them but they were so far into the life, it was difficult for them to get out. One of them has since passed and the other one I have not seen for a long tiime. I will not forget the love they had for me but I wish I could have helped them more. I think of one of the greatest Men on earth and heaven who sat with those people and did not judge them. I think sometimes it hits a raw nerve on people who may think it is possible for anyone to get there at some point especially in this economy.

God said be a joyfull giver. Who are we to judge if one person is more deserving than another? It brings joy to my heart that I can bless another soul with a smile and a small donation. If they are down and out, the human thing to do is give a helping hand. That may be the small jesture they need to pick themselves up and turn things around.

I agree that if the oppurtunity arises we should take it.

IMHO I believe we should be spending more of our time looking into where our tax dollars are being spent. We are getting so upset over what someone is going to do with our spare change, we even take time to write about it in a blog and debate each other over this. How about we take some of this energy and focus it on the ones wearing suits in DC with their hands out? They are spending/wasting way more of our money than anyone we will will ever meet begging on the street corner. If your blessed enough to be able to give, thats great. If things are not going so well at the moment then I pray you will soon be blessed.

I also give a buck when I can. With all the tornadoes, hurricanes, wild fires, and yes even a stock market disaster or two, a smile from a person in need, makes it worth the price. My son has schizophrenia and when I'm gone he will be on the same corner asking for help. Only a jerk would be indifferent to the suffering and hopelessness that many feel.

There's a busy intersection near our home where many less fortunate often stand. I always give them $1, without hesitation. If I see them ahead of time, I stop at McDonald's and get them a double cheeseburger meal with a Coke... Regardless of their situation, I always try to give them something - anything. ...and they are always grateful and appreciative. My husband does the same thing... Yes, it may be for drugs - or alcohol - but here's the thing - if that $1 brings happiness to him/her - in whatever way - for whatever reason - then I can feel good about it. Life is too short - and people are too judgemental... Why should it be assumed the person is a junkie or scammer??? Even if the person I gave $1 to is an addict, my $1 isn't going to get him/her much. Many of these people don't know how to get help - there are programs out there, but if the people don't know about them, how can they benefit from them? Maybe I will see if I can find a pamphlet that details services available to these people and give it to them along with the $1 or the free meal... I intend to keep giving - just like I give to the Red Cross (blood donation as well as monetary donation) and other local charities. That might be me out there one day - one never knows - and I certainly hope people would be nice to me if it ever happened... ...and for the record - I do not have a drug or alcohol addition! Everyone needs help now and then - especially in these tough financial times. There are a lot of foreclosed properties around here and the person standing on that corner might have recently lost his/her home - he/she might have kids to support. ...and let's not forget Christmas is right around the corner... I give my "gift" and it makes someone happy - if only for a short time - and it makes ME feel good that I could give them that. I don't think that makes me an "enabler" or a "bad person" - it just shows I have a heart.

I think most giving people are torn about giving to a homeless person because they don't think that giving a dollar will really make a difference in that person's life. Adults become immune to others hurting around us, specially in big cities. The other day I had an incident that really brought this home. My 5 yr of daughter noticed a homeless person sleeping on the bus stop bench. She asked why that person was there and if we could help them get a home, pay for a place for them to go sleep instead of sleeping outside. I've worked in a county hospital and have treated patients that are homeless and the vast majority of them have mental issues which are not easy to solve.
