If we won the big one, we'd quit our job(s), pay off the house, live abroad. But consider this: The amount of money it would take to change your life might actually be much more modest -- and a lot more attainable. Being able to go to the grocery store and not worry over every penny was glorious.

Nowadays, I think about 500k (saved up, or lottery) would do the trick. If I had that kind of cash, I would pay off my house, and my parents house, or even bettter, buy a piece of property where we could all live together.

I think having a paid-for house is the ultimate in security. Well, at least as much security as possible in an uncertain world.

re: How much money would it take to change your life?

I love this article. My husband and I are in Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University class and it has been all about learning what you can eliminate in your life NOW so that you can "live like no one else later." :)

About $30,000 would take care of our debt and then in a few months we could save 3-6 months living expense.

You're absolutely right. Winning the lottery sounds lovely but a lot less would make our life exceptionally comfortable.

Here's to us all reaching our goals!

I suggest that question has it backwards (although I realize most people will interpret it as applying to financial circumstances)

A change in attitude can change one's life completely and THAT doesn't need to cost a penny.

It would remove that monthly payment and pay off all my credit card debt. With what I don't spend there, I could build a healthy savings account in a year. The biggest change would be the relief from stress knowing I didn't have to worry because I could manage to pay the bills every month.

We have sold our 5 bedroom home and moved into a 3 bedroom mobile home, elimated car payments and as many bills as possible. Our plan is to have my wifes value in the workforce increased so she can support herself and our boys in case something would happen to me. She is working on her Bachelors degree in Business Management and has accepted a new postion with a new company that pays significantly better than she was making and has a defined career path. I love my boys and enjoy being with them. It is THE MOST important job anyone can have in my opinion. I do not need 'stuff'. I do need, as any person does, 'RESPECT'. So, take away my stuff, just make sure I feel loved and respected by my wife and children. Thats all I need to feel like a man.
