We couldn't find many new food and restaurant deals this week. Could this be a sign that the recession is easing, or is it just a lull?
This is a good weekend for free entertainment, with free admission to national parks and free admission to museums nationwide on Saturday, Sept. 2.
Sit-down casual chain restaurants still have ongoing deals. You can download local restaurant coupons from Valpak, find online deals for pizza chains and be notified of deals via Facebook.
Remember, not all local franchises participate in all national promotions, so be sure to ask at your local store.

This Saturday, Sept. 26, there is no excuse for sitting alone in your room.
Via two promotions, you can either visit any of the 391 U.S. national park for free as part of National Public Lands Day or you can get into hundreds of museums free as part of Smithsonian Magazine's Museum Day.
The National Public Lands Day is also the National Day of Service, in which volunteers are invited to help clean up and maintain parks. Last year, 120,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, cleared paths and planted trees. Many parks also are planning special activities.
Museum Day provides free entrance to hundreds of museums of all types on Saturday, Sept. 26. A few museums that are closed on Saturday are providing free entry on Sunday, Sept. 27. The promotion even includes some zoos. The venues are as diverse as the Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, The J. Paul Getty Museum near Los Angeles and Miami Metrozoo.

We've got some edible and some inedible deals today. Unfortunately, we don't have any gym deals to go with our free ice cream and cookies, but a nice, brisk walk is always free.
Not all local franchises participate in all national promotions, so it's always good to check. Sit-down casual chain restaurants still have ongoing deals. You can download local restaurant coupons from Valpak, find online deals for pizza chains and be notified of deals via Facebook.

I know I'm late to the dance here, but I finally understand why people love The Freecycle Network so much. You can give or get, de-cluttering your life or filling some basic needs at no cost.
No matter how odd the item, you can probably unload it. Earlier this week I gave away a half-pint of keys.

If it's Friday, it must be free food day, though we've got a few non-edible deals as well.
If you're on a diet, we suggest you take advantage of the $35 massage and the week of free yoga in lieu of the free ice cream. Or, do what we'd do and take advantage of both.
Remember that not all local franchises participate in all national promotions, so be sure to call before you go.

It's not comprehensive health care reform, but CVS is offering 100,000 free flu shots to the unemployed, and Walgreens will offer free flu shots to the uninsured in some cities.
CVS started giving flu shots this week at some Minute Clinics, at a cost of $30 or your insurance co-pay. Starting Sept 15, the drugstore chain will offer flu shot clinics at many of its stores. The vouchers for free flu shots will be distributed at events at One-Stop Career Centers, which offer job training and counseling.
Walgreens is distributing vouchers for free flu shots to the uninsured during the AARP/Walgreens Wellness Tour, which offers free screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, bone density and body mass index. Uninsured patients who visit the bus between Sept.17 and Nov. 15 can get a flu slot voucher. Flu shots start at $24.99 at Walgreens Take Care Clinics.

Chalk up another victim of the recession: bottled water.
It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.
We love bottled water. When we've been out and about on a 90-degree day and stop for a drink, we're thrilled to see an alternative to soda. There was a time that, if you couldn't find a water fountain, you were out of luck.
But the convenience of bottled water in single-serving bottles makes it easy to ignore just how much money you're spending for water you could get free and tote around in a reusable bottle.
