A lot has been written lately about kids' extracurricular or so-called enrichment activities, but the story that takes the cake is this one told by "Mighty Bargain Hunter": Parents bought a Steinway grand piano for their child "and built an addition on to their house to display it properly." You guessed it. The kid quit piano lessons in two years. How do you provide your child with fulfilling structured time without going overboard on commitments and cost?

Better gas mileage can be had from what used to be standard in cars -- the manual transmission, or stick shift. But how many drivers know how to use one these days?
It's a lost art, but a very efficient one. For its October issue, Consumer Reports bought two versions of seven different cars -- ranging from a $15,800 Scion to a $24,000 Mini Cooper -- and found a gain of 2 to 5 mpg with a standard versus automatic transmission in the same model.

The blogger who brought us a blow-by-blow description of how to make a month's worth of lunches in 25 minutes now tackles another great do-it-yourself project: how to change the oil in your vehicle. OK, the post about a 23-day supply of PBJ sandwiches was funny. Mike's oil-change post at Clever Dude is the real deal for those who want to cut spending by tackling routine chores they now outsource. After your initial purchase of equipment, he estimates how long it will take before you begin saving money.

Here's more bad news for grocery shoppers: Some supermarket chains are cutting back on their double-coupon offers. Think that doesn't matter? Aryn at Sound Money Matters recently spent $10 more than she had intended during a recent shopping trip because of new restrictions on double-coupon redemption. Not only that, but "I've noticed that the coupon circulars have shrunk, and the coupons themselves have become less generous," she writes.

If the "on sale" sign says you saved 50% on the new shirt you bought at the mall, did you really get a great deal? Not necessarily, says Kevin at The Red Stapler Chronicles, in a post called "'Sale' can sometimes be just another 4-letter word." Kevin's day job is manager in the retail world.

"Frugal Zeitgeist" is a very professional person, so it irritates her to no end when she hears young women talk, like, they're, like, unsure of themselves. She also hates it when their voices go up at the end of every sentence, even when they're not asking a question. This is no way to promote yourself and land a good job. "Stop it. For your own good, I'm begging you to stop it," FZ writes.

"Not the Jet Set" is sorely tempted on the way to work by perfectly useable things people have left out by their trash cans. But what are the rules for Dumpster-diving? Do you need to be sneaky? How do you handle shame? We did some research and found a handy post at Sueann's NWPR Blog, plus photos of her remarkable finds, including brand new KitchenAid food processor attachments. (Her finds don't include food; she hasn't become a freegan.) "Dumpster divers have rules," Sueann Ramella wrote. Here are some we gleaned from her post and from other sources:

Someone asked Jennifer Derrick the other day why she doesn't make more money so she can have the "finer things in life" -- jewelry, fancy cars, big house, expensive vacations. She's talented enough. Doesn't she want these things? Nope. But that person said: "Everyone wants those things and if you think you don't, you're living in denial. You only say that to make yourself feel better because you can't afford them."

It's a jungle out there in the airports with all the new fees airlines are charging to cover higher fuel costs. It's a real public service that FIRE Finance has assembled the baggage fees and policies all in one place. Unfortunately, the list doesn't include those other charges that seem to pop up every day: JetBlue's new $7 charge for a pillow and blanket that you get to take with you, US Airways' charge for bottled water, and the like. And, thank goodness FIRE also provides links to the airlines' Web sites. Some of the baggage fees have already changed since FIRE Finance wrote the post, or are about to go up.

Which store offers the best deals: the grocery store, the discount store or the dollar store? Our partner blogger Donna Freedman today explored a similar question, and advised readers that the best prices for foods and sundries often can be found at drugstores and other alternatives to the standard grocery store. And now we've found a Web site that emphasizes her point. The Crazy Dollar Shopper compares prices of various products at three types of stores.
