Here's news from Slate: Fewer American women are having *** augmentations and tummy tucks because of the worsening economy. Vanity hasn't totally taken a back seat to reality/gravity. Women are turning to cheaper, nonsurgical alternatives like Botox. What's next? A bailout plan for plastic surgeons?

"Mighty Bargain Hunter" is a mighty big man and wants to lose 100 pounds. (He's writing about his efforts at his new blog, Deflabbify). He knows that extra poundage is hard on his health and bad for his wallet. The post "10 ways being fat costs money" at his personal-finance blog, Mighty Bargain Hunter, contains some surprising information -- and a touch of levity. Here's No. 4 on his list: "Using more soap costs more. (That by itself isn't enough to work me up into a lather, though.)"

This post comes from Truman Lewis at partner blog ConsumerAffairs.com. Safeway will begin offering $4 prescriptions on hundreds of generic drugs at stores in the eastern United States and parts of the Midwest, becoming the latest supermarket chain to follow the trail blazed by Wal-Mart two years ago. The discounted prescriptions will be available at stores in the Chicago area, the District of Columbia, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey. The list of $4 drugs includes the antibiotic amoxicillin, blood-pressure medication atenolol, and levothyroxine for thyroid disease.

Adjusting your household budget to cover the higher price of gas can be tricky enough. Imagine having to balance the deficit-ridden federal budget. You can give it a whack at American Public Media's Budget Hero. It's fun, it's interactive, and it has really cool sound effects. Nothing like hearing the glass shattering when the budget you devise is out of control.

If Single Ma had accepted the two prescriptions written for her and for her daughter without question, she would have spent $100 out-of-pocket -- despite the fact that her workplace health insurance plan includes meds. She did some research, made some phone calls, and ended up saving $180 (that's not a typo), without accepting reduced care for herself or her beloved BabyGirl. This practical post at Fabulous Financials illustrates why you need to be a savvy consumer when it comes to medical care.

This post comes from Paul Michael at partner blog Wise Bread. The chances are, you're dehydrated right now. In fact, more than 75% of the American population is dehydrated, and worse still, more than 80% of them know they are. No big deal? Well, it is, actually. Lack of hydration can lead to all kinds of problems, including obesity, fatigue and a much higher risk of certain cancers. So grab a glass or three of water and read on.

This post comes from Trent Hamm at partner blog The Simple Dollar. Hopefully, that headline woke you up a bit this morning. Several months ago, I made a list of 101 goals that I wanted to reach in the next three years. I piled this list on top of an already long list of medium-term and long--term goals --including building a writing career and paying off debt. While making the giant list of goals felt very empowering at first, it soon became a big weight on my shoulders. I was reaching for too many things at once. When I set a goal, I'm committed to achieving it, and thus I often feel like Lucy and Ethel on the chocolate candy assembly line -- more to do than I can possibly keep up with.

Remember that old expression "My eyes are bigger than my stomach"? The fact is that if we see it, we'll eat it. Combine that with the fact that the size of pizza slices, burgers, bagels, soft drinks, movie popcorn and a lot of other foods has grown in the last 20 years, and you'll begin to understand why so many Americans are overweight. Even plates are bigger. Seeing is believing, and pictorial proof of portion inflation can be found at Liz Monte's post, "Portion size, then and now," at Divine Caroline.

If you want The Frugal Duchess' business, you'd better listen up. In an open letter to consumer-product companies, she says she's fed up with those that mislead, poison, overcharge or downright insult customers. "Stop filling magazine pages, cyberspace and television airwaves with advertisements designed to make me feel needy, greedy and inadequate," she writes in a guest post at Frugal For Life. For instance: "What's wrong with fine lines around my eyes? I've laughed a lot. I've cried plenty."

This post comes from Xin Lu at partner blog Wise Bread. I first read about selling hair in "Les Misérables," when Fantine sold her head of gold to clothe her daughter, Cosette. The hair trade just seems like such an archaic idea, but, actually, high-quality hairpieces are still made from real human hair and there is a huge market for sourcing natural hair. Here are some tips and information on how to sell your tresses for cash.
