Frugal Babe has boiled water, made both oatmeal and rice, baked biscuits and reheated lasagne in her new-to-her solar oven/cooker. Pretty impressive, no? Next she's going to bake a chocolate cake. We've been reading about solar ovens and wondered if they really work. In her post and the comments that followed, Frugal Babe answers a lot of questions about them. For instance, does solar cooking take more time? Just a little bit more with the one she bought, she writes. Hers gets to 350 or 400 degrees quickly and stays there if the oven's position is changed every half-hour as the sun moves.

Some frugal-living tips -- turning two-ply toilet paper into one-ply -- seem over the top, but others, like reusing Ziploc bags, are accepted practice in lots of households. The Happy Rock provides six "cheaper than cheap" tips "that border on fanatical to the point of being humorous" and asks readers to vote on their usefulness. "Rock" provides a thorough explanation of each über-frugal tip as part of an ongoing series of posts, complete with how-to links in case you need some help implementing them.

Frugal people really don't like cheap people because they make us look, well, cheap. "You see, many people have the impression that cheap and frugal are the same thing because of people like you," explains S. Shugars in an open, excellent, take-no-prisoners letter to Mr. Cheap at Saving Advice. If you recognize yourself in the behavior the letter describes, you'll know why no one in the office likes you.

Going away and afraid that your plants will dry up, particularly now that you've become a container gardener? Or maybe you're just too forgetful to keep them watered. Michael Nolan's Frugal Mania presents the cheap way to make your own self-watering device. It doesn't get much cheaper than this. All you need is a plastic water or soft-drink bottle and a piece of old pantyhose.

Here's a super deal to keep kids entertained during summer months: Raising4Boys has provided a list of free or discount movie specials available at theater chains this summer. "Dad" (aka "Nickel" at FiveCentNickel) says, "In case you're not aware, theaters often have special summer promos where they show G or PG films on weekday mornings for free, or nearly so."

Ron at The Wisdom Journal has recently written some in-depth posts about weighty topics, like often-overlooked disability insurance and the oft-ignored benefits of higher gas prices. So we were caught off guard by his equally thorough post (including photos) about how to iron a shirt. "Yikes! Did he say ironing?" Ron writes, anticipating readers' reaction. But when taking shirts to the cleaners costs more than $3 each, you can save $65 or more a month by doing it yourself.

We have to save vicariously through the superstars of drugstore shopping. The closest stores like CVS and Walgreens are 110 miles away. Bloggers at sites like The Centsible Sawyer, Mommy Making Money and Money Saving Mom are buying toiletries, diapers and other necessities for a teeny fraction of what they normally cost. Cathy at Chief Family Officer, a superstar-in-training, has dubbed their use of coupons, rebates and other store discounts "The Drugstore Game." As these champions of saving might say, the proof is in the free pudding.

We're quite sure it never occurred to you to cut up cereal liner bags and use the pieces between hamburger patties when you're stacking and freezing them. Empty tissue boxes? Fill them with those flimsy plastic shopping bags so you can easily pull out one when you need it. And those bags? Line the garbage pail or the paint tray (or our own personal favorite -- pick up doggie deposits). You'll find the complete list of these clever tips at TipNut.com, a site we immediately bookmarked after it was recommended to us by Abby Freedman.

Pinyo's wife thinks he's cheap. In his mind, he's frugal. Who's right? He scored a 20 on the cheap vs. frugal test he devised and posted at Moolanomy. That score indicates that he's neither, but that he "appears to be reasonable" with his spending. Take the test. It's fun. For example, here's Question No. 6. You have some old clothes. Do you ...? - What are you talking about? I don't have old clothes.
- I donate them when they get a little older.
- I turn them into rags.
- I am still wearing them.

We've read lots of lists of ways to reduce waste and simultaneously save money, but no one's is quite like Clever Dude's list of 50. Want proof? Here's No. 8 in the words of "Clever Dude": "Don't use those stupid disposable toilet brushes. That has to be the dumbest, laziest invention ever. Just spend 10 seconds brushing the toilet. Wear a rubber glove if you're worried about cooties, or just wash your hands like any other normal person would do afterward."
