This post comes from Xin Lu at partner blog Wise Bread. In a previous article about gasoline prices I noted that many packaged drinks are quite expensive and that the cheapest drink out there is water. The main reason people don't drink water is that it is tasteless and not very "fun" to drink. On the other hand, water is definitely better for you than sodas, so now there is a entire category of packaged drinks like VitaminWater that are basically bottled water with coloring, vitamins and flavor. Instead of buying those drinks, you can add many things to water at home to make it more exciting to drink.

We figure lots of folks will be eating tube steak rather than rib-eye on this Fourth of July. If you're having a holiday barbecue, hot dogs aren't the only way to save money. Food savings are on the minds of many personal-finance bloggers as Independence Day nears. We offer a smorgasbord of their thoughts, ranging from cheaper watermelon to hot wings that are free to those whose towns are "hotter than Hell."

Frugal Babe has boiled water, made both oatmeal and rice, baked biscuits and reheated lasagne in her new-to-her solar oven/cooker. Pretty impressive, no? Next she's going to bake a chocolate cake. We've been reading about solar ovens and wondered if they really work. In her post and the comments that followed, Frugal Babe answers a lot of questions about them. For instance, does solar cooking take more time? Just a little bit more with the one she bought, she writes. Hers gets to 350 or 400 degrees quickly and stays there if the oven's position is changed every half-hour as the sun moves.

You're a frugal shopper, so part of your emergency fund is a stash of food in your pantry and freezer. But what if you're getting down to the dregs and can't figure out a meal to make from this stuff. Or maybe you have a recipe in mind, but you're lacking two key ingredients. This is when a new recipe search engine, Supercook, becomes your friend. You type in the ingredients you have on hand and the site produces recipes that fit.

Jenn at Frugal Upstate remembers being served "tuna surprise" in elementary school: "I still have visions of a gray-green soupy sauce of tuna and peas served over (surprise!) four saltine crackers. Ick." (That reminds us of a high school cafeteria Friday staple everyone called "mystery meat.") You won't find slop like that at Jenn's frugal food series. She's exploring ways to liven up basic, cheap foods like eggs and canned tuna to help families cope with rising food prices. Jenn primed the pump with her own recipes, and her readers have responded with lots of creative ideas.

It's once again time to take a break from the heavier issues of the day, and "Frugal Dad" gave us the respite we were looking for. Ponder this one: Is sneaking your own candy into the movie theater frugal or cheap? This is an academic exercise for us because we don't really care for movie theater candy. (We've got our eye on the popcorn with extra butter.) But it's a real-life decision for Frugal Dad, and you might be surprised at the decision he reached.

Before Cupid's arrow pierced his manly heart, "Nut" at The Writer's Coin did, well, guy things. He ordered takeout for dinner a lot. Even worse, "I would buy one of those salads in a bag that has all the fixings and -- gross as it may sound -- I ate it straight out of the bag," he writes. Now that he's moved in with "M," he's happy as a geoduck clam, and he's found the financial benefits of coupledom. Food, entertainment and "going out" are all costing less. "Economists call it 'economies of shared living,' and it basically comes down to sharing everything," he says.

What storied canned meat product is gaining in popularity as the nation's economic woes continue? It's Spam. Apparently that's not a cause for rejoicing in all American households. Spam gets no respect from Jeremy at Generation X Finance. "There is no shortage of absurd measures people will take in hopes of saving a few dollars, but I think this one takes the cake," he writes in a post called "Spam sales on the rise, common sense at an all-time low." (We assume this blogger hasn't tried Spam Lite.)

We've been to a Star Trek convention (or two) and had the self-restraint to limit our spending to a Bajoran earring (which broke the next day). Nick at Punny Money is apparently on the road to becoming a convention habitué (geek), and shares his tips for attending without breaking the budget. "Here's how we're saving tons of money at this and other similar sci-fi/fantasy/anime/whatever conventions while Joe Nerdboy is devoting all $6.25 an hour of his job at the video-rental store to coming here," Nick wrote in an early morning post from Balticon 42.

This post comes from partner blog Blueprint for Financial Prosperity. Cut out the morning coffee at Starbucks! Bring a bag lunch! Stop drinking alcoholic beverages! If you've been trying to find areas to trim in your budget, those are likely the first three things you'll hear suggested, right? The Latte Factor! It's horrible that you're wasting money on coffee you can brew at home. It's a travesty! OK, except you don't have a coffee maker at home, have hardly any time in the morning to brew it, and if you don't have it -- oh boy, your office had better watch out because you'll be one cranky man/woman/beast.
