Michael Jackson’s credit score: 564

TMZ, the news source for all things Michael Jackson, expressed amazement that MJ had terrible FICO scores.

"Here's a shocker -- Michael Jackson had an abysmally low credit score," said a story at the Web site. In 2007, TMZ says it has learned, Jackson's scores from the three major credit bureaus were 592, 524 and 575, averaging out to just under 564.

It's really no surprise, considering his well-documented ultra-extravagant spending and financial woes, including the fact that Neverland Ranch nearly slid into foreclosure. But there's a lesson for everyday people in the specifics that caused the King of Pop to have poor scores.

Here are the reasons given in the TMZ report:

  • A derogatory public record or collection filed.
  • The amount owed on delinquent accounts.
  • Number of accounts with delinquency.
  • Too many inquiries in the last 12 months.

To put this in perspective, FICO scores have a range of 300 to 850. A score under 620 puts you in the subprime market. (Experian offers a state-by-state look at average scores and debt.)

Michael Jackson may have made a mess of his finances, but he did prepare a solid estate plan, including a will, a living trust, and trustees and executors who are experienced and knowledgeable.

All told, Jackson's estate is worth hundreds of millions -- a number that's still being figured out. The total is expected to be considerably larger than his estimated $435 million of debt. Plus, the size of the estate has grown by $100 million since he died on June 25, and is expected to make $50 million to $100 million a year, The New York Times says. Compare that with the $55 million Elvis Presley's estate earned last year. The NYT also said:

In life, Mr. Jackson faced a precarious financial future, as he piled on debts to finance his tastes in art, to travel on private jets and to keep up Neverland. In death, his estate may enjoy the financial security he never had.

Jackson will be buried on Sept. 3, according to the Glendale News Press.

Yes, but people and financial organizations still extended credit to him to the tune of tens of millions of dollars. It was like giving a drug addict unlimited bowls of cocaine. He may have been a great entertainer, but Jackson was woefully ignorant of finance or economics. He was poorly educated in general. Some would say that Michael Jackson would still be alive today if he didn't have an army of sycophants and handlers helping to keep him in this "lifestyle."

A score under 620 is not an automatic 'subprime.'  The rest of the article is not surprising. The fact that you have money, assets, or status does not mean you meet you meet obligations contractually.

O, Please get off of it, You people forgot about the min. $24 million to $30 million he paid in law suits to that family who will never prosper off of it because it will turn out to be their down fall instead for lying. Now, M.J.J was and is still one of the riches black men on this earth, and he earned every dime like no onelse could like him of any race of people. Life happens! The media and the nay sayers ran him down like a dog just because he was so! talented and rich! in money, and because of his $ money$. Michael Joesph Jackson is going to make even more money dead. There no fico, credit score for that or no measurement. M.J.J was very intelligent, and he wouldn't got to were he was in life if he wasn't. After being ran down and mouled by people, he didn't take care of himself resulting in a premature death.

It is very funny that your credit score doesn't die with you!

Michael died but and he spent his money or his borrowed money on things he thought it matters to him, well he did the right thing cause other wise he would have died without enjoying it!

Just goes to show you how superficial credit scores are . . .

So what! I thought people's credit scores were private information  - not something the unethical media blasts all over the web once a person's deceased. I mean who cares what his credit score is/was! Artists are notoriously bad at finances - it seems to go along with being right-brained. What are you people going to come up with next? Oh, I know, how about something like "Michael Jackson had some dust under one of his fingernails - what a crime!"

No matter how educated or how rich you are or your FICO score or how ignorant some may consider you if you didn't enjoy Gods' creations and shared your fortunes

whats the use .I've never seen anyone after they've died back up a Brinks truck and

take their fortunes with them.Duh!

                                      MR. H

Michael credit score is the same as mine. Who cares, the BANKS are nothing but a rip off . And if I could say what I wanted to say about the banks and the credit bureau's they would not post this message. Love you forever MJ.

Is there a FICO score for the banks? To be fair, we can start giving every bank the average number for the comsumers, then add points for helping people out with good loans and substract points for executing predatory terms for credit cards, for being unwilling to help the homeowners, etc. The estimated FICO score for many major banks would be....hmmm lower than Michael Jacksons... Wait... I forgot one factor...let me RECALCULATE..I got IT!

MINUS one trillion for the money that they still owe to the tax payers...

HAHAHA

Cry

The people who come up with these scores are the same people who rated CDO's AAA, the least risky valuation. Do I really care what they rate MY credit?!? Hell NO!
