The founder of Papa John’s Pizza really missed his Camaro. Not only is he paying $250,000 to buy it back, he’s giving away pizza Wednesday to fellow Camaro owners to celebrate.

"Papa" John Schnatter sold his 1971 Z28 Camaro more than 25 years ago to help his father’s tavern stay afloat and ultimately launch Papa John's, today the world’s third-largest pizza company. Schnatter earlier this year decided to reward himself by finding the car he gave up, offering first a $25,000 "finder's fee" to the person who could produce the title to his long-lost Camaro, and later $250,000 to whomever could produce the title and transfer the car.

Jeff Robinson, left, hands over the keys to John Schnatter's 1971 Camaro. Now Schnatter’s Z28 is coming home to Louisville, Ky. And Jeff Robinson, from nearby Flatwoods, Ky. (pop. 7,605) is $250,000 richer. The company has also extended a $25,000 reward offer to the family who originally bought the car from Schnatter in 1983, in appreciation for their help in linking the contest winner with Papa John's. (Classic-car auctions have seen prices as high as $110,000 for a 1971 Z28 Camaro, but most sales prices are considerably lower.)

Robinson, who has owned the car since 2004, learned last week that he in fact might have Schnatter's car. The family who originally purchased the car heard about the contest and began searching for details online, ultimately directing them to Matt Hardigree, associate editor of Jalopnik.com, a Web site devoted to automotive news and gossip. Hardigree investigated the details himself then contacted Papa John's with the lead.

The company spent last week confirming the authenticity of the Camaro, including verifying title with the Kentucky Division of Motor Vehicles, pulling ownership records, and finally tracing the "out of state transfer" back to the state of Indiana where records indicated the car's previous owner as Robert Schnatter, John's father.

In celebration, Papa John's will offer a free large, one-topping pizza on Wednesday, Aug. 26, to Camaro owners. To redeem, Camaro owners must arrive at their nearby Papa John's restaurant in their Camaro to order and pick up their free pizza. Limit one pizza per Camaro, and one visit per Camaro.  Here's a restaurant locator.

well good for papa john...it must be nice to be able to give a quarter million dollars for a second rate pony car.  it makes for the american dream,  but it ain't a MUSTANG.

Sweet, Free pizza for me. Its not about what model the car is, its about the part it played in creating his business. Typical mustang owner reponse there Gary.

Good For Papa, and good for me I've a camaro, yay pizza for lunch or well more than likely a late lunch, and gary come on a second rate pony car, isn't it the stang that claims the pony title along with the escort, or should we just call them flowstangs with there fake muscle producing sound mufflers, my camaro don't need flowmasters to sound tough the motor does it for the mufflers, don't forget unless you don't know camaros eat mustangs, ever read the reason chevy made the camaro and how it got its name, and don't hate on me i've also got a 06 mustang decked out with the california dreams package its nice but the camaro's faster and with the vette chasis it also handles better in the curves, the stangs turn radius is amazingly better than the camaro, but who am I to decide I own one of each and like them for there own features. sometimes you wanna feel tough, like a bad ass(camaro), and sometimes you just like to look and sound good(stang)

dude,  say what you want to say,  but you ate your words on april 1st,  1968.  you camaro guys are stil afraid of the COBRAJET.  bowties couldn't and still can't touch the snake.  isn't it a pity.

oh god.. mac vs. pc for the motorheads.. :P

Great story!!!!I hope he enjoys the car, I'm sure alot of us out there can tell a story about how they wished they could find one of their first cars But, agree w/Gary it's not a mustang(My husband & I  have a 67 Fastback)

Gary G you're dreamin, Mustang's don't holdacandle to the Sweet Camaro style, body and muscle. You seen one Mustang and you've seem em' all. Now look at the new Camaro and that is sweet. Class, beauty, muscle  and styleall rolled into one. Camaro rules.

Good for you papa John, you deserve it and hope you enjoy it as much as you did then as for the arguement between camaro and the mustange come on folks there both awesome cars but if you do the research theres more camaros out there and the small block chevy allways prevals,Ive had both my self but my heart will always beat for the heartbeat of america

Great car!  Not so great pizza.

Camaro is playing catch up to the Mustang just like it did in the late 60's. Remember who ran them self's out of existence in 2002 "the Camaro". If it wasn't for Mustang keeping the pony car alive there would be no more Camaro. At least back then Camaro had it's own heritage now they are just borrowing from the true bow tie sports car, the Corvette.
