One bright side of the recession for consumers is that fast-food and restaurant chains are coming up with one deal or freebie after another, in hopes of snaring the few dollars customers are willing to part with.

In the next few days, you can get a free fish taco from Long John Silvers, a free original slider from White Castle, plus deals on smoothies, waffle cones, subs and breakfast sandwiches, in addition to deals we reported earlier this week.

Tightwad Tod at Consumer Reports noted a new study by AlixPartners that said up to 40% of U.S. chain restaurants could be fighting for survival within the next year. In its own survey of 1,000 diners for its chain restaurant ratings, Consumer Reports found that 48%  said they planned to eat out less often in the next year.

Here are a few of the deals fast-food chains are offering in the next week to bring us in:

  • Bring in this coupon and get a free original slider at White Castle. Move quickly because the coupon expires Sunday, July 12. Limit of one sandwich per customer and one coupon per customer per visit.
  • Buy one smoothie, get one free at Jamba Juice, through Sunday, July 12 with this coupon. Free item must be of equal or lesser value, one coupon per visit.
  • Free Baja Fish Taco at Long John Silver's from opening until 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14. Limit is one per customer, no purchase necessary.
  • Quiznos has a coupon for buy one sub, get one free, and also for $1 off a regular sub or $2 off a large sub. Good through Saturday, July 11.
  • Free original chili dog or small cone at Weinerschnitzel 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 14. There are also coupons on the site for a free Angus beef chili dog and a free iced coffee.
  • TCBY, the frozen yogurt chain, offers a waffle cone for 99 cents every Wednesday. No word on expiration date.
  • Dunkin' Donuts is offering egg and cheese Wake-Up wraps for 99 cents each. No expiration date on this one, either.

Just a reminder: Many fast-food franchises are locally owned and may not participate in the national promotions, so it's always a good idea to check with your local restaurants.
