Watch out for fake ‘cash for clunkers’ Web sites

It should come as no surprise that as soon as the U.S. Senate passed "cash for clunkers" -- legislation granting vouchers to people who trade in their gas-guzzlers for new, more fuel-efficient cars -- a host of scam operations would pop up trying to profit.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is warning consumers not to be deceived by official-looking sites that claim to offer information on how to trade in your car. Sites that ask for personal information or offer a preregistration opportunity should not be trusted, the agency said.

"There's only one official site for the government, and that's NHTSA's CARS.gov Web site," said NHTSA press officer Eric Bolton. "Folks should go there and not rely on ‘cash for clunkers' sites on the Internet as they are not official."

The program, called the Car Allowance Rebate System, is the latest iteration of a plan to stimulate the auto industry by convincing buyers to trade in gas hogs for new, eco-friendly models. The Congressional Budget Office has said the bill could jump-start sales of up to 150,000 new cars.

But cash for clunkers has been criticized by Republicans for costing too much, and by some Democrats and environmentalists for not doing enough to limit emissions or emphasize renewable fuels.

Just another OBAMANATION bs plan passed by millionaires in Congress and Senate who couldn't care less about who drives a clunker or a limo.

Can you say SMOKE and MIRRORS?

What a wonderful concept:

We, the taxpayers, will pay $675 million to turn 900,000,000 lbs of vehicles prematurely into junk yard/land fill waste.

These are our 500 elected geniuses hard at work - ever greening the budget !

WOW what a bunch of nasayers if you dont like the program dont apply as for me I like my hot air hauler except when these so called economy rockets are so close I mcant see them over my tailgate(always). As for my goats I am looking for a fordzilla so they can have a/c. I already tried to buy new and was told my gas hog was worth nothing eventhough I was trying to buy a gaspig. Greetings from TEXAS.

Congress.  What a joke.  They say a one payer tax system for our health care or universal healthcare is socialism.  Yet they now own banks and GM.  If that ain't socialism, I immigrated illegally into the wrong country.

another program the goverment introduces and and fails. Just wait they run medical insurance.

Craig and Sean, Its 3500 cars 4500 trucks (minus) the trade-in. But what is wonderful is you are sold even before you walked into the showroom and believe me you are not walking out with a 9k or 14k vehicle especially Sean when you walk in with your daughter.

This is so utterly predictable.  This cap and trade BS is even worse.  Obama never met a government agency, boondoggle, that he doesn't like except inspector generals.

If cap and trade passes tomorrow, Obama gets to staff a brand new "Emissions Enforcement Agency" that will have police powers, an 8 billion dollar budget and hordes of fanaticial green freaks ready to crack the green whip.

The people who have been scammed are the US taxpayers!  There are hundreds of industries suffering through this deep recession, yet the losers in Congress and the White House continue to throw more money at the failed auto industry.  It's shameful.

salesman, read it again.  it is 4500 if you trade a suv or truck for a vehicle that gets 5 or more MPG.  So if I trade my cherokee for a civic I should qualify for 4500.  At least that is what is looks like on it's face.  I guess we'll have to see how it pans out...

Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!

No matter how poor the efficiency of the car you are driving now is, if it is road-worthy and running well, you will contribute MUCH MUCH less pollution to the environment on average by keeping it on the road.

You cause much more pollution and damage to the environment by manufacturing a new car and probably more so if you buy a hybrid...not to mention the pollution contributed as your old wheels are recycled.

Don't buy a new vehicle unless you run the life out of the one you have - of course then it doesn't qualify for this program.
