Airline appears serious about pay toilets

Travelers on European budget carrier Ryanair will likely have to start paying for bathroom use, and may wish they had a wooden (think hollow) leg.

Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary told the Guardian newspaper in England that he's serious about charging for toilet access -- an idea he had earlier bandied about -- and also plans to reduce the number of bathrooms on his Boeing 737-800 jets from three to one.

Those bathrooms will be replaced with six more seats -- "which means more passengers will stand in line longer for the privilege of paying to potty. This can't be good for beverage cart sales," wrote Rob Manker at ChicagoTribune.com.

O'Leary said he's asked Boeing to look into placing credit card readers on bathroom locks in new Ryanair planes and making that seat adjustment. The price to potty would be £1, or about $1.60, when it takes effect within two years.

"We are flying aircraft on an average flight time of one hour around Europe," O'Leary said. "What the hell do we need three toilets for?"

Hmm. Perhaps because the 737-800 seats 162 to 189 passengers, depending on the seat configuration, not including O'Leary's extra seats.

Carl Unger at Smarter Travel commented, "To be fair, I can see his point. Ryanair essentially acts as a bus service in the sky .... Of course, your average 737 carries three times as many passengers as your average long-distance bus."

Seeing may be believing when it comes to O'Leary, who the Guardian says is known as "O'Really" because he doesn't always mean what he says. However, it's true that O'Leary has never met an airline fee he didn't like.

In fact, ChicagoTribune.com says, "There are reports O'Leary is also tossing around the idea of requiring passengers to load their own luggage onto jets, so that the airline can cut costs by not having baggage handlers."

Stateside travelers aren't immune from rising fees. Starting Wednesday, June 10, United Airlines customers who don't pay their checked-baggage fees online will start paying an extra $5 at the airport, ChicagoTribune.com says. That will amount to $20 for the first bag and $30 for the second. US Airways will follow suit in July.

Hey, that is a no brainer.  Just whip it out, under your coat guys, pee on the floor and soon the airlines will get the message.  People have to pee.  So, the Airlines need to be aware.  How about the Captain and crew, do they get docked from their pay for peeing while underway?

Should the major hotels start charging to pee?  Should the restaurants also?  Do you know why they do not?   They tried pay toilets in some.  So, the guys just ate dinner, peeed under the table and left.  They got the message.  Your dog can teach you the trick.  Go for it.

time to take a stand any airline charging these fees ask to see every manager supervisor  and employee at the airport and complain to them a few hundred thosand people trying up everyone will get the message across

If push comes to shove, then i WILL take a 'dump' and piss in the aisle of the airplane!! I don't care if they arrest me and take  me to jail!! Does the Fee to use the bathroom onboard include the Fllight Attendants and Pilot/Co-Pilot and Navigator???  I'm sure the News Media and Travel Iindustry, especially the (*&^%@! Airlines will THINK TWICE about having Paid Toilets! When you gotta go, you go! Mother Nature can NOT wait a hour+/- for a plane to land when bodily functions tell you that you need to go NOW! And, with only 3 (?) bathrooms for a plane load of people???

If any of the US carriers go to thisI'll piss in my seat. I don't care!

Michael has a truly serious suggestion.  I have been telling everyone that if Ryanair or any other airline follows this toilet charge scheme, as many (men) as possible (ladies are of course welcome too) need to pour urine on the seat as they leave the plane.  3 of these should ground the airplane, and may cause the cleaners to walk off the job.  I'd give them a week to change the policy if this catches on, and I'll bet whoever thought of it gets the sack he deserves.

Pee in the isles. That'll stop em!

To charge $15.00 for the first bag is horrible do they think you don't need any clothes?  This is downright extortion, I will drive or take the train or I will vacation . on my patio.  As for the bathroom charge that is ridiculous. I have lost all respect for the airlines.  Mayvbe the attorney general might be able to help.

what about the elderly?...maybe O'Leary will require everyone to buy adult nappies before boarding his planes and not bother with bathrooms at all!  Downunder traveler...

RIdiculous.

It's a health risk. What if people get sick?

What about people with kidney problems or diabetes, who have to stick to regular patterns to be healthy?

It's also a risk because you have to stay hydrated on a plane and people might avoid drinking the water they need, which puts them at risk for dehydration.

The cost of the bathroom should be part of the flight, it should not be separate. That way, health risks are minimized.

Some people will hide under blankets and try to pee in cups to avoid the fee.

I won't fly on an airline that charges separately for use of the bathroom. There's no reason at all not to include the fee in the airline ticket.

And consider this!!! Charging separately for the bathroom WILL COST MORE, because the administration of pay-per-use is MORE than the cost of charging in with the cost of the ticket. SO THERE IS NO SAVINGS OR EXTRA PROFIT and it causes great inconvencience.

Idiocy.
