Airline appears serious about pay toilets

Travelers on European budget carrier Ryanair will likely have to start paying for bathroom use, and may wish they had a wooden (think hollow) leg.

Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary told the Guardian newspaper in England that he's serious about charging for toilet access -- an idea he had earlier bandied about -- and also plans to reduce the number of bathrooms on his Boeing 737-800 jets from three to one.

Those bathrooms will be replaced with six more seats -- "which means more passengers will stand in line longer for the privilege of paying to potty. This can't be good for beverage cart sales," wrote Rob Manker at ChicagoTribune.com.

O'Leary said he's asked Boeing to look into placing credit card readers on bathroom locks in new Ryanair planes and making that seat adjustment. The price to potty would be £1, or about $1.60, when it takes effect within two years.

"We are flying aircraft on an average flight time of one hour around Europe," O'Leary said. "What the hell do we need three toilets for?"

Hmm. Perhaps because the 737-800 seats 162 to 189 passengers, depending on the seat configuration, not including O'Leary's extra seats.

Carl Unger at Smarter Travel commented, "To be fair, I can see his point. Ryanair essentially acts as a bus service in the sky .... Of course, your average 737 carries three times as many passengers as your average long-distance bus."

Seeing may be believing when it comes to O'Leary, who the Guardian says is known as "O'Really" because he doesn't always mean what he says. However, it's true that O'Leary has never met an airline fee he didn't like.

In fact, ChicagoTribune.com says, "There are reports O'Leary is also tossing around the idea of requiring passengers to load their own luggage onto jets, so that the airline can cut costs by not having baggage handlers."

Stateside travelers aren't immune from rising fees. Starting Wednesday, June 10, United Airlines customers who don't pay their checked-baggage fees online will start paying an extra $5 at the airport, ChicagoTribune.com says. That will amount to $20 for the first bag and $30 for the second. US Airways will follow suit in July.

This is simply a logical extension of using fees to maximize revenue and profit.  Another example is a recent flight I was on where a violent thunderstorm resulted in the emergency oxygen masks deploying.  They too were all coin operated.

Michael O'Leary plays a great publicity game and Ryanair was a champion of low-cost flying. However his contempt  for his paying passengers has seriously damaged my view of him and his airline and I now refuse to fly with them. Why fly with an airline who treats you with contempt?

$1.60 to take a piss. Cripes!

To generate some extra cash they should remove the toilets in the

boarding hall and make the passengers wait for another hour before

boarding.

Gotta say I agree with O'Leary.  Just traveled with them and young couple sat next to me BOTH had to ask me to stand to get up and go during 1h 20m flight.

Ridiculous.  At least they got trapped behind the drinks trolley.

However, whatabout toddlers?  They pee all the time.  They gonna have to pay a quid a pee?

And the 1hr flight might be true, but doesnt take into account at least 30 mins waiting at the gate to load and sometimes, 20-30 mins taxiing/unloading times on landing.

So, toilets at the gate or #fail

Also "2 for 1 on our shot drinks" would have to be dropped, prompting ppl to get pissed, honestly - that I hate.

This guy is crazy. If RyanAir needs to do this to stay in business, it should go of business.

These charges apply ONLY if we fly Ryanair.

Stop flying them.

Once enough people stop flying them, they will stop this stupid charge.

What isn't being discussed: when you use your card to pay for the toilet, visa and your bank will love you while they add on their own fees.  It will easily be $5 to take a piss.

Forget that: I'll wait for someone stupid enough to pay to come out and go in to piss without paying: I won't care if it doesn't flush.  If I can't get in, someone will be announcing "Clean up in aisle one!"

I'm surprised airlines don't have seats like park benches- you pay extra for a seat cushion.  Did you want lumbar support with that? That will be an extra $20!  Pretty soon to avoid toilet paper charges we will have to tear out a page from the airline magazines!

Flying for vacation used to be fun, now it's the worst part of the vacation experience - take the train if you can!

This is stupid,

whats more stupid is to have to pay for the oxygen mask when they come down...

how in the hell are you going to be fidgeting with credit cards or quators while the plane is crashing.

I tell you I will DRIVE or take a train to where I need to go... PERIOD!
