With the dreaded tax-filing deadline approaching, many corporate chains are looking to provide solace. And what better way than -- you guessed it -- food!

They’re figuring free Cinnabon bites, a taco or ice cream cone likely will soften the blow. And they may be right. So let’s check out the details.

Cinnabon commiserates with citizens with its giveaway slogan “Tax Day Bites!”  It’s offering free Classic Bites from 5 to 8 p.m. April 15 while supplies last; the number of bites given to each person varies by store. The offer is valid at participating U.S. mall-based bakeries -- not at Cinnabon outlets in airports or travel plazas. No coupon is needed and no purchase is necessary.

Taco Del Mar’s slogan goes a step further: “Taxes Suck. Tacos Don’t.”  You’ll need to fill out an online form and provide an e-mail address to retrieve the coupon -- the “free Taco 1099” -- for your tax day taco.

MaggieMoo’s Ice Cream and Treatery is offering free single-scoop ice cream cones to all comers throughout the day on April 15. Check out the company’s Web site for the MaggieMoo’s nearest you.

And the deals don’t end with food.

Brighten the tax day of a friend with a free card from BlueMountain.com or Hallmark.com or other card sites.

If you’re still working on your taxes and your adjusted income in 2008 was less than $56,000, never fear, the government is here to help you with filing online. And you can always get free help by calling the Internal Revenue Service

Soon it will all be over.

My father passed away when I was 12, my mother passed away when I was 18 then I managed to graduate high school and college on my own income from working day and night.  Worked and had a successful career and have never had one dime worth of free hand-outs from the government or anyone else.  Was working full time and going to high school; was terminated on a tempory basic because of a shortage of orders (rehired later) and was denied unemployment soley because I was a student.  So "free" stuff has never been a part of my life and, today, all this free stuff kind of makes me sick.  Folks need to start learning that there is work out there if they are not too damn lazy to work!!!

Wow, do you need some help? We all need help sometimes, and I think your reaction may just be a cry for help.

It's promotional, to help business. Not because people don't work.

Say it's a free taco, and it was alright. Maybe I'll start spending my hard-earned money at that taco place and not Chipotle's across the street. That's exactly why businesses give out "freebies."

I was just laid off of a temporary job after going on temporary military training, so I hear you. However, I don't understand the futile and misplaced venom.
