Airline might charge for bathroom use

Has this ever happened to you? You're boarding one of those small commuter planes that doesn't have a bathroom, and you're extremely nervous about your bladder. (We once sat next to an elderly lady in distress who was in tears by the time the plane landed.)

This comes to mind because the head of Ryanair, Europe's largest budget cheap airline, told the BBC that it may begin charging for in-flight use of toilets. Michael O'Leary, what are you thinking? Surely you jest.

That is a possibility. While his comments created a furor, no one knows if he's for real. "Nobody, even his own aides, seemed to be sure if he was serious or pursuing his well-documented penchant for making brazen declarations to win free advertising," an Associated Press story from Dublin said.

(An O'Leary spokesman confirmed that the toilet charge has been discussed. Remember, "budget" airline means the tickets are cheap but you pay for everything else.)

Here's more, according to AP:

"One thing we have looked at in the past, and are looking at again, is the possibility of maybe putting a coin slot on the toilet door, so that people might have to actually spend a pound to 'spend a penny' in future," O'Leary said, using a local euphemism for relieving one's self.

How droll.

Even worse, he suggested a charge of one British pound coin (about $1.40). What about the European customers of Ryanair who use euros, including the people of Ireland, where Ryanair is based? O'Leary said he didn't think that would be a problem.

We recall that during public discussions about changes in U.S. airlines -- like charging for pillows, baggage and drinks, and removing the movies -- some people joked that paying for the air your breathe or potty access could be next.

No one really thought that would happen. But, in the future, if you don't have a British pound coin aboard a Ryanair flight, you might want to skip the in-flight drink (which, of course, isn't free) -- or save the cup.

Bad taste in charging for the toilet, bad odor, too! I would be like Captain Kirk of the Enterprise...to go where no man has gone before...pee on the ceiling, right next to the pilot's cabin. Ha!If everybody peed on the carpet in the isles, they would have to pay for the expense to clean it up after every flight. Save money? Ha Ha!

I ahve been to Europe before and it is not unusual to be charged to used the services over there. If they charge you a fee, then you can expect somebody to clean your hands after doing your business

Can anyone remember the days of the pay toilet? I can remember that my parents let us go on the floor because we didn't have a dime to use the toilet. I guess that airline would get a stinky surprise if they institute that kind of charge. LOL

If they do inniate this policy, people should set a specific week  online for everyone not to fly this airline. The sooner we start to take control and give up doing something to get these companys attention they will get the message. Don't fly them for a long enough period and they will go out of business. Maybe the next one will get the message.

I agree with Jeff Ohmes and Doc - great posts.  It is absurd to charge for the restroom on a plane.  I don't know how the employees can stand working for such a bottom-feeding airline and CEO, but times are tough and likely to get worse.  I used to work in travel and got out of it because I got sick of people's mindset--cheap price and screw everything else and then coming back and complaining because they didn't get their butts kissed.  Wake up people!!!  Stop thinking cheap, treat others and yourself  with respect and dignity, and stop using bottom-feeder airlines and other business that are disrespecting you by treating you like crap because they charge cheap prices.  Just remember---Michael O'Leary(the CEO of Ryanair) and his executive team are laughing all the way to the bank because they think that the average consumer is stupid and cheap.  Time to change that mindset!!!!

RyanAir is a discount airlilne.  Their flights are much cheaper than other European airlines. It can cost only 28 euro (that includes all the taxes) to fly from Amsterdam to Italy, as compared to a larger airline chain, which may cost 200 euro.  The point is, even if you have to pay 1 euro to use the restroom, you are still only paying 29 euro for the entire flight,  as opposed to 200 euro for the same flight from a larger airline chain.  I would still rather pay that extra euro for the restroom , and save 170 euro on the flight itself.

I think people need to realize that with Ryan Air your flight from London to Frankfurt, or Frankfurt to Rome cost you only 10 Euro... that's at least a hundred Euro cheaper than any other airline. So if you want to save a hundred Euro, pop a few coins in your pockets to use the restroom. If you don't want to have to pay to use the toilet, feel free to pay the more expensive ticket price.

Beggers can't be choosers! :)

When I think I have heard of the craziest , they come up with something far more ridiculous , I just have to laugh in disbelieve, it is just hilarious!

Seriously is this actually legally allowed, is anyone putting a stop to these more and more ridiculous charges, like maybe the FEDERAL AVIATION or whom ever, which deparment is appropiate for this??

Yes we can understand they raise up their airfares because of the increases of higher oil, now tell me what all these ridiculous charges have to do with that??  I do not believe the trains have come up with these ridiculous charges?

If you asked me;  they are just getting as creedy as those people in the Wall Street, no one was watching them and except for us and the ones in the media.

Last but not least, like I have always been asking myself like others:  I wonder what is next??!!!!!

Como es posible que te cobren por ir al bano!!!!!  Que ultraje!!!

If you can't hold it and are paying that much less to fly this airline, then maybe wearing a depends would be in order.
