Airline might charge for bathroom use

Has this ever happened to you? You're boarding one of those small commuter planes that doesn't have a bathroom, and you're extremely nervous about your bladder. (We once sat next to an elderly lady in distress who was in tears by the time the plane landed.)

This comes to mind because the head of Ryanair, Europe's largest budget cheap airline, told the BBC that it may begin charging for in-flight use of toilets. Michael O'Leary, what are you thinking? Surely you jest.

That is a possibility. While his comments created a furor, no one knows if he's for real. "Nobody, even his own aides, seemed to be sure if he was serious or pursuing his well-documented penchant for making brazen declarations to win free advertising," an Associated Press story from Dublin said.

(An O'Leary spokesman confirmed that the toilet charge has been discussed. Remember, "budget" airline means the tickets are cheap but you pay for everything else.)

Here's more, according to AP:

"One thing we have looked at in the past, and are looking at again, is the possibility of maybe putting a coin slot on the toilet door, so that people might have to actually spend a pound to 'spend a penny' in future," O'Leary said, using a local euphemism for relieving one's self.

How droll.

Even worse, he suggested a charge of one British pound coin (about $1.40). What about the European customers of Ryanair who use euros, including the people of Ireland, where Ryanair is based? O'Leary said he didn't think that would be a problem.

We recall that during public discussions about changes in U.S. airlines -- like charging for pillows, baggage and drinks, and removing the movies -- some people joked that paying for the air your breathe or potty access could be next.

No one really thought that would happen. But, in the future, if you don't have a British pound coin aboard a Ryanair flight, you might want to skip the in-flight drink (which, of course, isn't free) -- or save the cup.

it seems to me that charging people to use the restroom when they are captive at 35,000 feet is not only so absurd that it should be against the law. i know in florida if u are a store that serves X amount of customers ,it has to provide restroom facilities by law. an aeroplane charging to use the restroom is as bad and unethical idea that if the NTSB allows this to go forward, i would'nt trust them to keep the wings from falling off. after the aerolines have a number of accidents because someone does'nt have anything but plastic and no cash, i don't think the rule will stand for long.

If the airlines start charging to use the restroom on the airplane during a flight, I would definately boycott flying until they changed the rule.  I, like a lot of people, have a bladder/prostate disorder, and I think people like me would protest loudly against paying to use the restroom on the plane.  I agree with creig.  They should not be charging you to use the restroom when you are captive at 35,000 feet in the air!

I don't know what the airlines are trying to do these days!  They are charging for you for each piece of luggage you bring, and I've even heard some of them are charging for non-alcoholic beverages that used to be free!  My friend works for United airlines and his job is on the chopping block, and I think that these absurd fees are part of why airlines are suffering!  You can't help but wonder; Are airlines trying to commit financial suicide?  It sure seems that way!  If they want to stay in business they need to quit charging its customers for necessities that should be included, like they have been, until the last couple years!

i have flown on Ryan air before and OMG what a joke i was going to Great Britian from Germany and had to get there quick it took just over an hour or so but Delta was like 100 times more expensive and also took 8 more hours to get me to my destination but to get back to the subject at hand i felt like i was at a swapp meet when i was on there first it is a stampede to board the plane with people running to it to get a good seat and then when you do get on here come the sale people oops i mean flight attendents they would sell you their uniform if they could get away with it. but yes i beleive with my experince that they would charge you for the use of the restroom they do everything else so why not

If this charge for the use of bath room is adopted. The Ryan air CEO and all the executives team need to see a psychology to see whether there mental are properly function.

Next may be seat belt will be charge.

If that's the case...I'll Crap on the floor.

If the airlines are going to used this practice in the future I will assume that the people will start suing and boycott  those airlines.

I will follow suit - pay to pee - Nope!!  I'll walk back to where the restrooms are, squat and pee and/or poop and to hell with them.

Dejavu?  Well back in the 70's stores in the U.S. tried charging a quarter to use the lavatory. It did not go over very well. I believe it was unconstitutional. It did not last very long, as I assume the A/P deal would follow-suit. In the U.S. @ least?

Come on folks, lighten up. That has got to be a joke. Does 'Clean up in economy class isle' sound familiar to you?
