McDonald’s coffee: Free or not so free?

With Denny's recent free breakfast and Starbucks' plans to offer its own version of breakfast value meals, it's no surprise that some McDonald's restaurants are upping the ante -- free coffee for the whole month of February.

But it gets complicated. There's much discussion online as to where to find this free morning jolt. You won't find it at every McDonald's; we called one in our town and they knew nothing about it.

But it's clear some people are getting in on the deal.

One poster at Slickdeals said he went to Mickey D's to pick up pancake syrup for his leftover IHOP pancakes (talk about cheap) and saw this sign: "Freebruary: Free medium coffee -- vanilla, hazelnut, regular iced coffee flavors available, February 1-28, 5 a.m. to 9 a.m."

"There was no Denny's-sized line or anything," he said. "Just the regular customers. I didn't have to buy anything either. So I picked up a medium vanilla iced coffee for free."

A few other voices chimed in, two noting they had heard about the promotion and expected free java, but were charged for their coffees when they ordered food.

One poster from Atlanta did score: "What I like about the deal is you don't have to buy anything else," he wrote, adding he thought it was a brilliant marketing effort because he usually orders food when he goes in for the free coffee even though he seldom eats breakfast otherwise.

So, you pay your money, you take your chances. Or, you can call your local McD's and just ask. There's still a few weeks left in Freebruary. Maybe enough calls will shame late adapters into it.

If you can't afford a coffee at McDonald's, then make your coffee at home or adjust your budget.

The cost of a breakfast meal should automatically include the cost of a small cup of Joe. Just like Burger Kings offer of a free Coke with your meal. Supply and Demand reasons out, more traffic will be generated.

Wow!!

If McDonalds wants to give free coffee they should let everyone know which McDonalds are offering the offer and not try to trick the public.

What are they trying to HIDE?

Apparently, Micky D's have second thought, they have now changed to 5am to 8am, NOT 9am.

WD, you're missing the point, it’s a marketing ploy that is hinge upon the troubled economy.  It is a very good idea for McDonald’s to give back to the public while the economy is doing so badly.   I can see by your comment that you’re not a real thrifty type person.  Because, if you were, you would know that it feels good dropping by McD’s for a FREE cup of coffee while heading to the office.  It has nothing to do with if you can afford it or not...duh.  THANKS MCDONALDS AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

is free for goodness sick free is free thas adjusting your budget

Free is good and 2 mcmuffins for $2 is a deal!

Here in Chicago, since Jan. McD's has been offering a free small coffee every Mondays...I don't want it to end! It's part of their McCafe rollout - which I'm not a huge fan of. Maybe I'll try it on a Tue and see if it works?

Enjoy while it lasts!

But coffee at home costs money, WD, and this article is about free coffee.  Go lecture elsewhere.
