Ramit Sethi has blogged since 2004 at I Will Teach You To Be Rich, promoting his personal vision of entrepreneurship. Now he's prepared to give some money away.
If you're already a devotee of this innovative blogger, you'll have guessed that the recipient will be an entrepreneur. You're right, but not in a way you might think.
Ramit has launched the I Will Teach You To Be Rich Scholarship to award $2,500 to a social entrepreneur with a concrete plan to help other people -- lots of people.
Here are some of the rules:
- Applicants must be in their 20s.
- You must have a history of "past entrepreneurial accomplishments."
- You must have a plan for "a socially innovative project."
- It can't benefit just a few people. "The key is that it must scale," Ramit wrote in another post. "Instead of helping one child (which is great by itself), I’m looking for someone who can take that interaction and apply it to 100, 1,000, or 10,000 people."
- You can download an application here. The tentative deadline is Jan. 15, but check back in case it's extended.
In addition to the $2,500, you'll get personal guidance from Ramit and access to other people within his considerable network.
Why is Ramit doing this? He understands, he says, "that there's more to being ‘rich' than money. Although we all define rich differently, I believe that giving back is a central part of our purpose here -- back to the community that helped us, guided us, and taught us."
