The standard methods for making more money aren't in the cards for many right now, "Nickel" at FiveCentNickel remarks: "Unfortunately, now that the economy is in the crapper, it's probably not the best time to ask for a raise, push for a promotion, or angle for a new job."

Well said. So you've got to move outside your comfort zone to come up with some extra cash. This is particularly important for those who've lost their jobs and aren't eligible for unemployment benefits, or people who don't have emergency funds.)

Nickel presents "36 ways to earn extra money." Check them out and see if you can add to his list.

Among the possibilities identified by Nickel:

    • Deliver newspapers. Newspapers are suffering but still in business. Turnover in circulation departments is often high, so you may find an early-morning driving route.

    • Deliver phonebooks.

    • Shovel snow. Anyone in this line of work could have made a good chunk of change in our community this week if they could stand working in subzero temperatures.

    • Be a golf caddy. Not all of the country is in a deep freeze right now.

    • Clean homes or offices.

    • Become a referee if you're well-versed in a particular sport.

    • Turn your car into a mobile billboard by selling ad space.

    • Take photos and sell them. Nickel links to a post at Get Rich Slowly that explains the stock photo business.

I slightly disagree. I have no worries about losing my job, because I'm an employee that people want to keep. If you're a slacker, never come to work, and never get your job done then you should be very worried.

If you fear your company may go under then it also may be a very good time to job hunt on the side. Being unprepared will get you nowhere - If you find greener pastures then take them!

When companies cut costs - They cut dead weight. I am by no means a burden. Good tip selling digital photos though! I just bought a new camera not long ago, and Florida has some beautiful scenery I could snap. : )

I recently picked up a part-time job serving pizza in a cute neighborhood restaurant.  While I don't really want to be away from my family, I really only work two nights per week for only six or seven hours total for the week, and I make excellent money in tips.  People are still eating pizza.  I get free meals on the nights I work.  Plus, I get a discount on any food I order for my family, so we are able to enjoy an occasional evening out for much less.

In response to pennyseeds; I don't care how good of an employee you are if the economy crumbles your job is gone too, YOU'RE NO EXCEPTION!!!!  NO ONE IS EXEMPT from being laid off.
