250,000 miles and still going strong

Quartermain, Cathryn Sykes' trusty 1994 GMC Safari van, recently reached a big milestone -- 250,000 miles on the odometer, with the original engine and transmission, no less.

She paid $9,000 in cash for him 11 years ago and has treated him with loving care. In return, he's dependably hauled hay, plywood and a miniature horse, plus occasionally pulled a horse trailer.

What's not to love, she explains in an ode to her used van at Money to Spare. (Her dedication to her vehicle, "Quart" for short, reminds us of Miss Thrifty's regard for the fabulous Thriftymobile.)

Cathryn purchased Quartermain after he was traded in after less than four years by the original owner. If that owner continued to buy new and trade in at similar intervals, here's a comparison of what Cathryn and that owner spent:

  • Cathryn's costs over time: Less than 5 cents per mile, including $3,000 in repairs but not fuel and routine maintenance.
  • The original owner's costs over that same amount of time: About $34,860, or nearly 14 cents per mile.

Invested for 25 years with a 6% return, that would produce a hefty $155,648. "Is a 'new car' smell worth over $150,000? Or is it smarter to buy a good used car, maintain it properly, drive it gently and keep it until it racks up 250,000 miles or more?" she asks. "You decide. It's your money."

I too have chosen not to buy a new truck for a long time.  I own a 1991 Chevy pickup and have owned it since 1993.  It has about 187,000 miles on it with original engine and transmission.  It is a 5 speed and I still have the original clutch in there too.  I would rather save the money that I dont pay in interest or invest it my house.

Glad to hear there are people like me out there. Still driving a 1979 Datsun King cab, model 620. Who knows the mileage at this point? Who cares! Have several people who left their phone numbers and would love to purchase  it. Sorry ,it is family by now! Take care of your property and it will iake care of you!!

you"re reason the big three need a bailout.  In stead of making payments for a new vehicle, your taxes will go up to pay for a bail out and you will still be driving an old car.  GREAT JOB!  Better yet invest in your house.  Smart move I'm sure that has given you a HUGE return in the last year.  I'm sure the kids of the UAW workers will still be happy, even without a Christmas this year.  Read an ecomnic book in your free time and maybe we won't end up in a depression.

I could take all of my paychecks and put it in a savings accout for 20 years at 6% and I would have a one million dollars.  Live on the streets eat at the rescue mission and never ever buy a thing.  That would sure create a stong economy.

I wonder why unemployment just hit a 26 year low????? duh!!!! I'm bet it has nothing to do with you mooches not buying anything for 20 years.

I had a 1994 Mercury Cougar that had 228,000 before my wife talked me into getting a different vehcile.  I gave the cougar to my brother who drove it, then had to give it to his ex-wife before it died. I'm sure there had to be 270,000 on the original engine and trans.  I bought a used Saturn Vue with 73,000 miles and plan to keep it until it has at least 250,000.  I've heard it said the cheapest car to drive is probably the one you already own.  Great Job, love to hear the encouraging comments.

J Garza I sure the tax business in Detroit is going to  be outstanding this year.  Do you need a CPA if you are out of work do to a layoff.  I hope you paid cash for you Saturn.  The unemployment rate is at a 26 year low so I don't think your services will be needed any more. Don't want you to have a repo.

Do not blame those of us who have proven American vehicles are built to last, instead turn your finger to those who feel good about putting their american money into foriegn vehicles. Live here, play here, spend here, Stay Here!

At least she is driving an American vehicle! What are the rest of you driving? American vehicles are built to last and as we all know they are a huge part of our economy, so why do I pass foriegn vehicles on the road? Is it because they were cheaper? Good choice America, save a couple thousand to get us where we are today!

I own a 95 GMC truck with 280K- all original...maintanence sure does pay off
