5 valid reasons to stop using cell phones

David G. Mitchell knows he's not preaching to the choir when he strongly recommends that most people stop using cell phones. He observes that "I will not use a cell phone and you probably cannot be separated from yours."

Yet, he makes a compelling argument in a pithy post at Saving Advice that provides five reasons to give up cell phones and save money.

Health is one of his concerns.

Research hasn't confirmed a direct link between long-term cell phone use and cancer, possibly because cell phones have been widely used for a relatively short time. But some studies suggest a connection. As a result, the director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute cautioned employees to limit their use.

Among the things we do know for sure:

Chatting on the phone while driving contributes to vehicle crashes. That's why some states have wised up and banned use of handheld phones behind the wheel.

Cell phones have opportunity costs because they distract you from the task at hand, whether you're meeting a client or, we'll add, out on a date. David writes, "Unless you are a doctor waiting to perform crucial surgery or you have some significant role in national security, chances are you are just not important enough to need to be available all the time."

(He also says, "If you cannot go to a grocery store and decide what to buy when you get to the produce aisle, you should not be grocery shopping.")

Cell phone accessories are expensive, not to mention the cost of texting, Internet access, etc.

We don't need to be constantly accessible. We got along pretty well when all we had were land lines.

An exception, he says, is having a prepaid cell phone in case of true emergencies -- when you're driving in the middle of nowhere or your teens are out and about at night.

"Give up the cell phone and put that money back in your pocket and you will really find that no one had anything to say to you anyway," he writes.

I've canceled my land line and made my cell phone my primary phone. Why? I don't get hasseled with wrong numbers and telemarketing calls on my cell phone. Plus I travel alot so for safety reasons a cell phone is important to have. Yeah, we got by in the past without it, but that's because there were other things in place (like pay phones) that gave people the ability to get in touch with someone. Good luck in finding a pay phone now.

Technology is useful, but don't go overboard with it. I've got a bare bones cell. No Internet, no text, no camera, etc. That's all I need. If you get wrapped up in the bells and whistles, of course it's going to cost you a fortune. Use it properly, use it wisely and be smart with what you need and it'll serve you well and save you money at the same time.

I gave up my land line permanently because of the convenience,  low cost of my cell plan and the fact that I have moved a number of times.  My phone is not expensive at all, I have no contract and have unlimited local and long distance.  I never talk on my phone in the car unless I'm in a parking lot and need to make or take an important  call.  As to the health aspects, until they are proven I won't worry about it.  I'm almost 71 years old and in great health.

Life is good.

This is nonsense. A more useful article would have been 5 reasons to give up your home phone.

I do think that cell phones have a good purpose.  I for one work for several different clients and enjoy not being tied down to an office.  My car is my office and yes, I talk while driving!  I have not had an accident since havbing my cell phone and I find it efficient to make those calls while driving so I do not have to do it when I am home with the kids or have the calls come while I am with someone.  I do not have texting and I have three boys that all have a phone so that I know that they are safe and I can be reached whereever I am since I am not stationed in an office.  Cell phones have added to my quality of life with my kids.  It has reduced stress in my life and I appreciate them.  I do not have any fancy phones or internet options.  I shut it off on weekends so I can spend time with my family uninterrupted.

I absolutely agree with those 5 reasons for not having cell phone. My wife and I don't have it, and get along fine without it. However, most stupid people view cell phone as status symbol especially clipping those blue tooth on their ears all day that makes them feel important. Seeing people who are complaining that they could not pay their bills but have the most expensive cell phone available. Stupidity!

Cell phones allow their owners a false sense of importance. If you need one to feel important, it's cheaper to pay for one than for the therapy you probably need.  And as for having one when you break down in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere: been there, done that. I was in a dead zone and couldn't even reach 911.

It might be a better value to carry a very good bullhorn.

Many people replied that they keep a cell phone for emergencies. Some said they choose not to subscribe to a calling plan, but keep a pre-paid phone for emergency use.

I would like to remind everyone that any phone with a charged battery can be used to call 911 in a true emergency. It will still work if your contract has expired. Keep that old phone in your glove box and ditch the monthly payments next time your contract expires.

On another note, please remember that old cell phones are not toys. I have responded to many false 911 calls as a police officer because kids were playing with discarded cell phones.

I agree that the cell phone is nice to have in emergency situations but I also agree that for most people, it's ridiculous to be accessible at all times. It really depends on your individual situation as to what your needs are concerning the cell phone.

They used to say sitting too close to the t.v. was bad for your eyes (wrong), swallowing your gum stayed in your stomache forever(wrong), etc. don't believe everything everybody tells you, you got to live a little. you got to die from something.

I think its all the old heads (ancient folks) that wants to do away with cell phones because they dont know how to operate one. Me and my boyfriend have cell phones and we dont have a land line at home. Our minutes are free after 9 wiht verizon anyway so it actually comes out cheaper for us to JUST have cell phones...Plus agreeing with another comment what do you do when your out and have to make sudden calls or a family member has to get in touch with  you for an emergency....?????
