Many of us are mired in gloom and doom right now. If you keep your ears open, we suspect you'll hear that a growing number of people you know are feeling the pain of a brutal economy.
So it may be a challenge to come up with 10 things in your life that are going well. This feel-good exercise comes from "Frugal Zeitgeist," who observed that it's "cheaper than therapy and healthier than alcohol." She's right.
Many readers of her blog responded with their personal lists. After reading a bunch, poster "nekronomiv" noticed a trend: Most people focused on family, friends and pets, personal growth and overcoming difficult times. "I also notice how the acquisition of financial wealth doesn't really make it to the list ...."
FZ's personal list covers many aspects of her life: a job she loves plus a recent promotion, a mom in good health, a significant other who is patient, autumn in New York. "I just got called up for jury duty, but I'm off the hook because I served less than six months ago," she added.
But we couldn't live without money, and many reported that they're still doing OK financially. Many said they have jobs they like or job prospects.
"Vh" at Funny about Money got a job interview, which is great because she's expecting to hear news about layoffs at her current job and was wondering if she's too old to get hired by someone else. There's also a possible upside to a layoff -- "I will be free of the horrid commute and of working for an institution for which I and most of my colleagues have no respect."
Hawa Bond has two wonderful sons, parents she sees every week, and a loving fiance, not to mention "fantastic health insurance, a great 401(k), and a Roth IRA that was invested wisely."
Abigail is happy about her good timing. She wrote: "I was in the housing market (with a loan I probably shouldn't have qualified for) but got out around four years ago. And it was enough to pay off my mortgage, my student loans (which was what the original down payment was supposed to have been for) and pay back my mom, who had lent me money."
