Many of us are mired in gloom and doom right now. If you keep your ears open, we suspect you'll hear that a growing number of people you know are feeling the pain of a brutal economy.

So it may be a challenge to come up with 10 things in your life that are going well. This feel-good exercise comes from "Frugal Zeitgeist," who observed that it's "cheaper than therapy and healthier than alcohol." She's right.

Many readers of her blog responded with their personal lists. After reading a bunch, poster "nekronomiv" noticed a trend: Most people focused on family, friends and pets, personal growth and overcoming difficult times. "I also notice how the acquisition of financial wealth doesn't really make it to the list ...."

FZ's personal list covers many aspects of her life: a job she loves plus a recent promotion, a mom in good health, a significant other who is patient, autumn in New York. "I just got called up for jury duty, but I'm off the hook because I served less than six months ago," she added.

But we couldn't live without money, and many reported that they're still doing OK financially. Many said they have jobs they like or job prospects.

"Vh" at Funny about Money got a job interview, which is great because she's expecting to hear news about layoffs at her current job and was wondering if she's too old to get hired by someone else. There's also a possible upside to a layoff -- "I will be free of the horrid commute and of working for an institution for which I and most of my colleagues have no respect."

Hawa Bond has two wonderful sons, parents she sees every week, and a loving fiance, not to mention "fantastic health insurance, a great 401(k), and a Roth IRA that was invested wisely."

Abigail is happy about her good timing. She wrote: "I was in the housing market (with a loan I probably shouldn't have qualified for) but got out around four years ago. And it was enough to pay off my mortgage, my student loans (which was what the original down payment was supposed to have been for) and pay back my mom, who had lent me money."

I don't believe you

Since I have  always been one not to charge more than I have in the bank to cover the charges, I am lucky there. I have been in my house for over 14 years, it has appriciated. I get my granddaughter every other week living in my home. My daughter now treats me like maybe I do know something. and My son calls me every 5 or 6 days to tell me he loves me. My business which is linked to manufacturing is doing okay, not great but okay.

On the other hand I have my father also living in my house who I must cook for. My husbands and my mothers health are poor. And somebody told me recently that I wasn't getting any younger.

Well guess what? Everything posted above is about life life. the good the bad and everything in between.

10 things I feel good about:

#1 I have a roof over my head and a comfy bed

#5 I have great friends

#6 I have a terrific cat!

Sure I wish I was thinner, and in a committed relationship and that I did not live paycheck to paycheck.  But when I consider how horrible some people have it I am thankful for what I do have.

The 10 things I feel good about (and that I am grateful for):

1. My family - all of them, even the 'outlaws' that I gave up in the divorce.

2. My wonderful relationships - my 'honey', my beautiful daughter, my siblings, my best girlfriends and the multitude of coworkers I've had through the years.

3. My home, which is beautiful, warm, solid and in a great neighborhood.

4. My education, the formal and the informal, the fact that I can read for pleasure and balance my bank account are all credit to my former teachers

I love seeing these lists!  Karen, thank you so much for highlighting my post.

I am glad that I have a nice home. I have never missed a meal. I have a beautiful young wife. I love my brother... I have two dogs and five cute puppies. My pool is nice and fresh. The view from my balcony is beautiful. I love my mother-in-law. My hot tub is hot....

Fast Eddie From Wakulla

I love the autumn weather in western PA

The ability to listen to live music at a concert

Fresh strawberries with custard

The fact that I can walk around the block and my knees do not hurt.

A spouse who is home by 5 pm.

Children who are happy and healthy.

My mother is just a phone call away.

A brother and sister who adore me.

A job that offers flexibility.

A full moon that brings peace, harmony and joy.

Thanks for the link to Funny about Money.  Here are 10 things that line my dark clouds with silver:

* At least I have a roof over my head and the resources to pay it off.

* Once the small 2nd mortgage is paid, no lender will be able to evict me from my home.

* It will take the county tax assessor two or three years to put me out after I begin to default on taxes.

* M’jihito has a job and is young enough to recover from whatever happens to this country, assuming anyone in the sub-Richistan classes can recover.

* I have a nice paid-off van with plenty of room to sleep in.

* I know how to cook from scratch.

* Beans are delicious and I know lots of ways to cook them.

* The veggies I planted have started to sprout.

* My health is good and so I at least can work, if I manage to overcome the prevailing cultural bias against older people.

* My friend and I are  getting steady work at The Copyeditor's Desk (our little daylighting venture) and could crank $10,000 or $12,000 a year apiece.

My ten things that bring me financial calmness:

*  I was finally able to kick the cigarette habit last week!

*  I have been exploring simple and green living for about two years now and have lots of food growing in my backyard.

*  I finally got over my fears and applied for a second job in June and I got it!  I now bring home an extra $150 a week from that job.

*  I have spent my entire life shopping at yard sales, thrift stores and clearance racks.  It is nothing new to me.

*  I am not above picking up someone else's castoffs from the curb.  And my kids think that it is fun too and it becomes an adventure for us sometimes!

*  I have already turned off my satellite-two months ago.  The bonus is more time spent actually talking with my family and reading more books (from the library, of course)!

*  Thankfully, my MIL helped me get a loan for a four year old compact car with better gas mileage than my other (paid for, ten year old) car.

*  I work for a company that is showing no forseeable signs of laying anyone off and I have been there for many years.

*  My mortgage is locked in at a reasonably low rate, so as long as I stay current with my payments I will always have somewhere to take shelter from the world.

*  I have health insurance for my family if I need it.

10 Things I feel good about? Ok, in no particular order...

10. I feel good about my value of life in Humans and animals. I havn't got the heart to injure or kill anything on purpose now.

9. I feel good about having a great family, I have 3 brothers and 4 sisters and love each and everyone of them.

8. I feel good about having my own house now and I can do whatever I want to it without fear of a landlord telling me different.

7. I feel good about my tallents; writing, motorcycle mechanics, communication with others.

6. I feel good that I have a healthy family (kids and Wife)

5. I feel good about my change in point of view of small dogs vs. big dogs. I have two Yorkshire Terriers that I love to death!

3. I feel good that I'm not a picky eater and can and will eat almost anything within reason.

2. I feel good about my personal accomplishments so far in life.

1. I feel good about today. The sounds, the sights, the smells, the tastes, the feel of the brisk fall air breezing by my face when I'm outside.
