On Sept. 27, your local museum might be one of the hundreds nationwide participating in Smithsonian Magazine's Museum Day 2008. With an admission card downloaded at Smithsonian.com, you and a friend can spend the day looking at art or whatever else is on exhibit, and it will be absolutely free. (Note: There's a limit of one free pass per household.)
You can check online by clicking here to see if museums in your area are included. In fact, a quick check of your home state or neighboring states will demonstrate just how cool museums can be.
For instance, Maryland has quite the selection of participating museums, like the Star Spangled Banner Flag House in Baltimore and the Lighthouse Museum and Historic Park at Piney Point. Seven venues are mentioned in Oklahoma, including the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch and the Will Rogers Memorial Museum.
For Houston-area residents, Museum Day within the 18-member Houston Museum District has been postponed because of Hurricane Ike.
Those who have a Bank of America credit or debit card get even more free museum opportunities. "Free From Broke" informs us that cardholders get free admission to more than 70 museums and other attractions the first weekend of every month through April.
Earlier this month his family went to the New York Aquarium at Coney Island. "Since my wife and I share an account in Bank of America, we both got in free," he said. "We found a coupon for a free child's admission so our daughter was free too." He adds that the concessions are expensive so it's best to pack a lunch.
