Extreme frugal living: Move into an RV

Jacob at Early Retirement Extreme is about to cut his already spartan monthly living expenses in half. How? He and his wife are moving into an RV.

This blog is called Early Retirement Extreme for a reason. Jacob, a guy in his early 30s, spent five years saving and investing 70% of his income on his way to a goal of quitting the rat race, and now he's going to save even more.

Here's how he explains his goal: "Six years ago, I decided that a lifestyle based on bills, mortgages, retirement plans, and conspicuous consumption that depended on working a job for 30 more years or maybe even the rest of my life was not for me."

He and his wife are nearly financially independent, but wanted to cut living expenses further and increase savings. Thus, they came up with the RV plan. They bought a 1991 34-foot recreational vehicle (289 square feet) with 58,000 miles, paying $14,200 -- in cash, naturally. Their rent for the parking space will be much less than they were paying for an apartment in the Bay area.

"It has wheels," Jacob writes. "It also has everything we typically use in our rental except wasted space."

(Jacob originally considered a tiny Tumbleweed house -- an idea we find very appealing -- but his wife wasn't enthusiastic.)

How does this lifestyle work? He explains some of it in a post called "How do I get my spouse to go along with my frugal plans?" (For more information, read "How to retire in 5 years.") Here are a few details:

He knows that living like this is not for everyone. "Of course there are some compromises," he writes, tongue-in-cheek. "You can't have a media room. You can't have a home gym. Also you have to say goodbye to the bowling alley in the basement you just financed with a second mortgage."

Hi folks, good reading your comments on living frugal move into a RV. I just retired with my wife and it's food for thought. Before I go on I just have a question. We hear so many people complaining about George W. Bush and rightfully so. But remember Al Gore? How about John Kerry? What I am getting at why did the American voters knowing Gore and Kerry were not war minded and would not lead this country into war, high energy cost? Why did george get voted in TWICE? Now they are looking for Obama as America's savior! Not going to happen. We don't have a Abe Lincoln.  Enough said. We might consider the RV living to save money. I like the idea of living on a boat because we are water people but would it get old?  And would motorhome living be to tight for space?  I do think both thoughts are worth investigating?  Any more comments on that?  Thank you readers.

Hey...RETIRED VERY VERY RICH ....Nice one.... You are so full of crap it it amazing..

David, quit your whinning & your political obam-a-nation message. BHO is nothing more than another tax & spend radical liberal that wants to create life time government jobs for his people who wouldn't know how to put in an honest days work - expect when it comes to standing in line to cash a welfare check or collect food stamps or standing on the corner selling drugs. Get off your *** and Do Something For Yourself. The government isn't supposed to be your mother, father, bank, grocery store, contraceptive, landlord............ Stand on your own two feet - and stop looking for more handouts.

Dave,

What scare me most are people like you - who think bigger government is the answer.

America is the greatest country in the world - that's why everyone wants to live here & try so hard to get in legally or illegally. Try looking at the positive - even the poorest in our country are rich in comparison to other parts of the world. FREEDOM - not government dependancy. Stop looking for more handouts - get up and DO SOMETHING FOR YOURSELF

I lived that in a new deisel .33 foot Triple Slide motorhome not bad but not all its made out to be.Conisently needs repairs every thing is made to Gloss and Glitter so it looks awesome when you purchase, however most R.V.'s are poorly made and moving them down the road they tend to disassemble themself best to let them sit. That still requires lots of upkeep they are like a boat the best 2 best days are the one when you get it and the one when you lose your ### and sell it .Truely a Rich mans toy.I would say buy a cheap home and travel and stay in nice hotels you will be money ahead cause living in a 100 sq feet gets old quick for 1 person now if thiers more than 1 forget it or if you have a pet worse!!!!

this economy has gone to s... thats for sure, hard for me to believe either political nominee will do the trick, so now what? what do we do? really what can we do? People need to stop listening to all the B.S. and start living again, spending some money and get the economy back. The goverment needs to start doing something about our gas situation, which we all know is filling most politicians pockets is why there is just talk no answers to why?Why don't we just take whats our's in Iraq, some oil for all the lives lost and take Irans oil to,while we are out there. Save us the trip back in the next few years.

I PERSONALLY LOVE THE IDEA--------SO MUCH; I'VE BEEN DOIN' IT FOR LAST 5 YEARS--AFTER RETIRING.  I HAVE A 33 FT LAND YACHT (RV) CLASS A MOTOR HOME-IT'S GREAT---WITH RISING GAS PRICES (THANK GOD I CHOSED REGULAR GAS FOR FUEL---I TOOK IT ONE STEP FURTHER-GLAD I DID, TOO.  I BOUGHT AN ACRE OF LAND,  DUG A  WELL AND HAD ELECTRICITY HOOKED-UP FOR A 30 AMP SERVICE (IT COST APPROX $50.00 A MONTH ELECTRIC WHEN USING A/C (VIRGINIA  CLIMATE USUALLY3 MONTHS A YEAR)-$20-$24.00 A MONTH W/OUT. EVERYTHING IS THERE-------LIMITED SPACE-BUT-THERE. MINES LOOKS BETTER INSIDE AND OUT THAN SOME OF MY FRIENDS HOMES, DO!   I'VE JUST FINISHED MY FIRST MANUSCRIPT -ALL ABOUT THIS VERY SUBJECT-UNFORTUNATELY; BEING A FIRST TIME WRITER-PUBLISHERS AREN'T KNOCKING YOUR DOOR DOWN TO PUBLISH OR EVEN READ IT.........ANYWAY--IDEA IS NOT THAT FAR FETCHED-I'M LUCKY; KID IS GROWN-I'M DEVORCED.......SUGGESTION-USE A RELIABLE CELL PHONE COMPANY-UNFORTUNATELY I'M COMMITED TO A.T.T FOR ANOTHER YEAR-I'M IN A/THE DEAD ZONE----VERIZON WORKS THERE --THOUGH?  LIFE'S TOO SHORT NOT TO ENJOY IT-HAVE FUN-TONY G.

Yeah - you won the lottery and sold a company for 60 million -- you forgot that tomorrow the sun comes up twice! What are you smoking and who are you kidding? The only RV that suits you is "really vicarious".

life is short .so do what makes happy enjoy every momment of it,good  luck

Dear retired very very rich,I'm sorry to see your confidence level is not as high as your income. Why is it you find the need to tell everyone how much you have to make a point. You may want to look at what you wrote and how many (I) s are in your sharing comment. Money does not equal happiness. I'm sorry to say your comment seems very sad to me. Hope you take this the why it is intended. My mom and dad lived in their motorhome for 5 years. Moved from a very large home. They  loved it.
