Top false beliefs about credit cards

No matter how much personal-finance bloggers write about credit cards, myths about them persist. Kristin at Twenties Money Magazine sets the record straight with "TMM top 20 dumb credit card rumors."

Here's No. 18, which we think gets a lot of traction, even though it's absolutely untrue: "Cash advance is the same as using an ATM." In fact, credit card cash advances come with a hefty price tag.

Kristin says, "Actually, any cash advances that you take will probably account for the highest interest rate that you will pay on your credit card."

Another whopper: "It's OK to charge your credit card up to its maximum balance." This is untrue for several reasons, including if you care about your credit score -- which you should. Kristin says that "you should avoid spending more than 30% of your available credit line."

Possibly the most widely accepted -- and most insidious -- credit card myth is the one about how it's fine to make just the minimum payment each month. Sure, that's fine, if you don't mind making interest payments for years with nothing to show for it. The best credit card advice is to pay off your balance each month.

Credit cards are great for an unexpected emergency when you haven't budgeted for it, but otherwise a BIG mistake.  Pay them off every month if you use them.  They are such a huge rip-off if you do not.  And yes, they will raise your interest rate no matter how great you pay.  We have learned from experience.  There should be a law against it...

In response to RUSH-Yes you can charge a car to a credit card if the dealer accepts the card.  I have a friend who did this.  It's not something I would do, though, because of all the dealer incentives out there and you may also get a better deal thriough your bank or credit union in regard to interest rates!  It pays to shop around!

If you are current on your payments and pay more than the minumum you can call your credit card companies every 8-10 months and request a reduction in the rate.

Especially if you notice the rate has increased.  Indicate to them that you have had other offers that are lower and are willing to go with another company.  this has worked for me every time.  (my rates are 3.99  and 4.50)

DG, that is NOT true. Credit bureau companies do not consider an account as inactive if it has a zero balance. Zero balances do NOT lower your credit score.

Debt free is the way to be. Period.

Stop blaming credit cards for all your problems. I enjoy the convenience of credit card subsidized by the foolish and irresponsible.

Lets see....why doesn't the government do something about credit card abuse of the cardholders with outrageous rates and fees?  1. Cause the banks behind them make very fat donations to political campaign funds. 2. Because people willingly sign up for them even at the abusive rates they charge. 3. Because politicians don't want their rates to suddenly go up. 4. For the same reason they don't care about raiding the social security trust fund..it doesn't affect them!

Rush,

In the state of AZ you can only charge a max of $3000 for a car, I'm assuming each state has different requirements.

credit cards are the worst financial tool going .  the credit card co policies and rates should be Criminal . they prey upon those people who can least afford or understand the traps that are laid . i will never understand how they get away with it. some high up people must be making a lot of money in this market.  Who is it the dems or the gop ????

To whoever wrote about always paying off your card and leaving a zero balance each month lowering your credit score.  That is not true.  My wife and I have been doing that for over 3 years and not only is our credit score in the excellent range, but it has actually gone up in the last few years.
