Top false beliefs about credit cards

No matter how much personal-finance bloggers write about credit cards, myths about them persist. Kristin at Twenties Money Magazine sets the record straight with "TMM top 20 dumb credit card rumors."

Here's No. 18, which we think gets a lot of traction, even though it's absolutely untrue: "Cash advance is the same as using an ATM." In fact, credit card cash advances come with a hefty price tag.

Kristin says, "Actually, any cash advances that you take will probably account for the highest interest rate that you will pay on your credit card."

Another whopper: "It's OK to charge your credit card up to its maximum balance." This is untrue for several reasons, including if you care about your credit score -- which you should. Kristin says that "you should avoid spending more than 30% of your available credit line."

Possibly the most widely accepted -- and most insidious -- credit card myth is the one about how it's fine to make just the minimum payment each month. Sure, that's fine, if you don't mind making interest payments for years with nothing to show for it. The best credit card advice is to pay off your balance each month.

The best way to handle credit card, is to pay off the total balance before the due date falls. Pls keep the account zero before your bill generation date. DO NOT TAKE CASH ADVANCE AS YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY THRU YOUR NOSE

I have to wonder why our government doesn't require that cards be labeled as hazadous to your financial health. Credit card debt is just a very bad deal for the borrower and we should be making sure the public understands that. Just like we tell people not to smoke or eat too much fatty foods.

I shouldn't have to click a link to read about the top 20 credit card myths.  It should be included right on this web page.

If you have a large Credit Limit, is it possible to charge the purchase of a Car

on your Credit Card?  I have never tried, and don't know of any reason you could not.  Comments please, Thank you. Rush

Credit cards are okay if you pay them off each month.Make sure you dont fall for tricky offers and let them know you dont pay fees,if they insist drop them.If you pay them off each month your in control. The only credit card I have found to be customer friendly is American Express, the rest of them ,should care less. They are under federal juristiction, with little or no control.I am 82 and learned the hard way.

One of the biggest credit card myths is that you have to have one.  You don't.  A debit card and discipline to not spend more than you have is preferable than being in debt over your income.  I know - we were $65,000 in debt on credit cards and we got ourselves out.  If you have to have a credit card for travel and/or emergencies, make sure you pay at least 5 times the minimum due.  Remember - you want to be able to retire some day!

The best advice concerning credit cards is--rip them up!

I have heard that if a credit card balance is paid off monthly, the credit card account will show a ZERO balance and be considered an inactive account by the credit bureau companies, Trans. Union, Equifax, Experian.  Inactivity on an account can lower your score.  It is better to have at least a small running balance and make payments timely to increase your credit score.  Even if the balance is small, at least it will show activity and the timely payments will show good money management which is what I thought the credit agencies are looking for in their credit modules.  Just what I have heard...

Excellent!

Another false belief is "If I make my payments on time, my interest rate will stay the same."  NOT TRUE AT ALL! The credit card companies use every kind of excuse to raise your interest rate (housing crunch,Iraq, Hurricane Ike, Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Hazel (1954!),etc.) .  They just did me (6.25% increase despite making at least the minimum payment and paying on time).  Those companies are sleazy to the max!
