Oreos and Twinkies right out of your own oven

Here's a fad in cooking that can save you money: You can find lots of recipes to make cookies and other foods in your home that taste like store-bought or restaurant items.

We can understand the desire to duplicate your favorite restaurant meals at home, because eating out can be a big budget drain. And it seems to be catching on. Our partner blog Wise Bread recently featured Todd Wilbur, who has made a career for himself telling people how to do that.

But we're not so interested in cloning store-bought cookies. (Take a look at this recipe for homemade Oreos.) We know we risk offending the multitudes by saying that if we're going to bake cookies at home, we want them to taste a whole lot better than Oreos.

Cooking and baking at home are usually lots cheaper than buying ready-made food in the store. (If you want an interesting take on why that is, read this post at Casual Kitchen called "Stacked costs and second-order foods" -- and our thanks to Kris at Cheap Healthy Good for that link.)

Restaurant meals are also pricey because you're paying for labor, overhead and someone else's profit. That's where Todd Wilbur comes in, with dishes from places like Outback Steakhouse, Macaroni Grill, Planet Hollywood -- and McDonald's

Todd also has a recipe for homemade Twinkies. Twinkies at home? We'll pass. (But if Twinkies are your favorite food, we couldn't resist sharing this recipe for turkey stuffing made with Twinkies we found during research for this post. The cream filling is not wasted. It's combined with honey and used as a glaze.)

I love it.  There is something that's so fun about cooking and baking at home, recipes that you can normally only find eating out at a restaurant.  As the article points out it is also much less expensive.  Although not as exotic, we have posted a few frugal and fun recipes on our blog and received some great comments.

Thanks for the article, we are going to have to try the Oreos (although the link in the article isn't currently working).

That is just what we need, to make more junk food at home.  And we wonder why American's have such a weight problem.  What are you thinking?  How about suggesting some good desserts that have some nutrient value, not empty calories.

Mary, spot on. Spending on junk-food that increases your fat level isn't smart in the long run - think of all the medical bills that will result from it. Eating apples or bananas is even less time consuming. Get serious, get healthy!

Oh, geez, Mary.  A killjoy in every crowd and, to be quite honest, it has become tiring.  Mary, if YOU don't want to make Oreos at home because you are concerned about the weight of all Americans, then simply do not make them.  Don't criticize and have a tantrum because the recipe was posted.  I don't like Oreos to begin with, but other people do, so if they want a recipe to make them at home, then great!  I will be passing this recipe on to my Oreo-loving friends, however!  They love them some empty calories....as long as that's okay with Mary.

Woo Hoo, Wendy.  Tell it, girl.

Way to go Wendy!! The cookies can also be at Christmas an I bet all my neighbors will love them...

I like to make our treats at home because I can cut sugar, use whole wheat flour, etc. Not as healthy as plain fruit but better than store bought. Don't get me wrong, my teens love junk and get it when out with friends but they are happy to eat what I make too.

I guess if you factor in your time baking and ingredients costs; do you really think you're saving that much? My time costs quite a bit more; think i'll just buy the real stuff.

Sure we could make more junk food at home but why?! How about not eating junk food at ALL!

I think its great that we have the OPTION of making oreos at home. I like to cook and if i have a desire to make junk food its there. If people don't want to make them then why click into oreos & twinkies??????? Thanks for the recipe!!
