Planning a staycation or frugal vacation? Here's help

Lots of people are staying close to home as the price of gas makes long-distance travel prohibitive. A group of personal-finance bloggers is offering a collection of guides to low-cost fun in their own hometowns. These posts have lots of links and lots of prices. This is great if you live in one of these cities or are planning to visit.

We'll start with the city we grew up near -- the venerable Steel City, home of a mighty football team.

Kacie at Sense to Save has lived in Pittsburgh for only 14 months but it appears she's figured out how to get around (with help from a GPS. Roads and streets in the Burgh can be confusing).

Frugal things to do: The inclines on Mount Washington, a cruise with the Gateway Clipper Fleet, and visits to Pittsburgh's outstanding museums. The city also has great parks and shopping and dining districts.

Pirates tickets are relatively cheap, particularly when compared with the cost of a Steelers game. But, she notes, you can go to a bar to watch the Stillers on TV "with other ticketless fanatics" (who will no doubt be swilling Iron City beer). We might add that you can take a tour of Heinz Field. If you're a Steelers fan, you'll think the Coca-Cola Great Hall is like heaven.

Also on the list of cities to visit frugally: St. Augustine, Fla.; Washington, D.C.; New York City; Dallas; Minneapolis; and Seattle. Other bloggers have contributed articles about frugal things to do in their hometowns. We love James Rouse's top recommendation about Kansas City, Mo., at Capitalcouplesfinance.com: "First on the list has to be barbecue." If you've been to KC, you know how true that is.

Thanks so much for mentioning our writing project!

Thank you for the mention from MilkYourMoney.com as well.  We have been able to help quite a few find their way around DC!

Absolutely!  It's been a fun project!  Hope it saves some folks a few bucks this summer! Thanks for the mention!

Wow! Thanks so much for the mention. It's amazing how much fun can be had in your own city if you treat it like you're on vacation.

Thank you so much for the generous mention!  I've actually been looking through the posts to see what we could do for a vacation too!

Thank you for sharing our latest project.  It was a lot of fun and seems to be of interest to many readers.

Great information! Seeing that our dollar won't take us as far in the car anymore, it's nice to be thinking of more local fun.

Where's Salt Lake City, Utah? Anything good going on around there?! :)

I've been doing this for years, mainly because I can't afford to take a real vacation.  I plan things to do by going through my local paper's "Get Out" section, see movies, check out exhibits, etc.  I live in St. Louis and we have one of the last free zoos in the country.  When I am completely out of debt and have my savings fully funded, I hope to take a real vacation, but with airlines continuing to raise fares and tack on extra fees I'm wondering if I'll still be able to afford it.

Thanks for mentioning our group writing project!  It should be mentioned that if folks don't see their city on there, they can write their own post and we'll include it on our user submitted group of links, and include them on our "frugal things to do in.. " map.

All these posts make me want to travel across the country since everyone did such a great job touting their own locations.

With the economy the way it is, I won't be leaving my house for the next 5 years. I cann't afford to walk to the grocery store. I'm glad some people like the project. I don't have money to enjoy such luxuries.
