Lots of people are staying close to home as the price of gas makes long-distance travel prohibitive. A group of personal-finance bloggers is offering a collection of guides to low-cost fun in their own hometowns. These posts have lots of links and lots of prices. This is great if you live in one of these cities or are planning to visit.
We'll start with the city we grew up near -- the venerable Steel City, home of a mighty football team.
Kacie at Sense to Save has lived in Pittsburgh for only 14 months but it appears she's figured out how to get around (with help from a GPS. Roads and streets in the Burgh can be confusing).
Frugal things to do: The inclines on Mount Washington, a cruise with the Gateway Clipper Fleet, and visits to Pittsburgh's outstanding museums. The city also has great parks and shopping and dining districts.
Pirates tickets are relatively cheap, particularly when compared with the cost of a Steelers game. But, she notes, you can go to a bar to watch the Stillers on TV "with other ticketless fanatics" (who will no doubt be swilling Iron City beer). We might add that you can take a tour of Heinz Field. If you're a Steelers fan, you'll think the Coca-Cola Great Hall is like heaven.
Also on the list of cities to visit frugally: St. Augustine, Fla.; Washington, D.C.; New York City; Dallas; Minneapolis; and Seattle. Other bloggers have contributed articles about frugal things to do in their hometowns. We love James Rouse's top recommendation about Kansas City, Mo., at Capitalcouplesfinance.com: "First on the list has to be barbecue." If you've been to KC, you know how true that is.
