Buy a gas guzzler, get a gas-sipper free

Call it a desperation move or marketing genius. A Florida car dealer is offering a free energy-efficient car when customers buy a big truck or SUV.

BOGO in the showroom seems to be working. Dealer Jack Holcomb at New Smyrna Chevrolet in New Smyrna Beach said he's generating interest in his previously shunned gas-guzzling inventory. (And, as you'll note by reading the comments section below, it's not a unique idea. Readers are reporting similar promotions across the country.)

We already knew that this is a great time to buy if you really need a big vehicle, because a lot fewer people want one -- or can afford the gas for one -- and the prices have dropped. Meanwhile, the auto industry -- better late than never -- has switched its priorities from making trucks and SUVs to more fuel-efficient sedans. Here's a factlet for you: The sale of Hummers dropped 60% in May, according to Wired.com.

"The SUV as a lifestyle choice, as a personal statement, is dead," industry analyst Aaron Bragman told Wired.

So, what's an enterprising car dealer to do? Make lemonade out of ... um, leftover inventory.  Dealers aren't giving away cars: The catch is that you'll pay sticker for the SUV, or that the thrown-in car is a short-term lease, or that you'll have to finance through the manufacturer. With rebates and manufacturer-to-dealer incentives totaling as much as $9,000 on some 2008 Dodge trucks (and nearly that much on many, many other models), it's not much of a stretch for dealers to dig a little deeper and throw in something like a $10,000 Chevy Aveo, just to move the metal and avoid the inventory costs.

This reminds us of the California developer's limited-time offer of a free townhouse to anyone who bought one of his San Diego-area McMansions.

It's not the first time car dealers have advertised freebies, such as the Missouri dealer who provided a free handgun or gas card with the purchase of a vehicle. (Most people took the gun.) The offer of a free car has come and gone over the years, but seems to be catching on again. We've read that at least several Nissan dealerships, with the help of Nissan Corp., have a deal similar to Holcomb's.

Cfnews13.com said this about the Chevrolet dealer:

Holcomb said the profit margin may be lower, but added once the economy improves, repeat customer traffic will improve as well when they remember the dealer who gave them two vehicles for the price of one.

This is not a new idea. When I lived in Colorado (moved to Georgia a year ago) the KIA dealerships would have a BOGO sale at least once a year. Buy a new model and get a used Kia or one of last year's models free. The offer depended on what they were trying to get rid of at the time. It's about time that the idea caught on in the rest of the country.

Every Dealer of every Make will do this. It's called a NEGOTIATION.

First you need to ask yourself WHY? Think about the added expense, Ins. Regisitration, etc.

Also, I think it's because Chevy Cars are poorly made, they want to give them away.

Rememeber folks!! You don't get something for nothing. There are always hidden costs!!

Anyone know of a dealer in southwest Tennessee offering this?

Another game ... Dealer will keep price higher to offset "free" 2nd car.  If people cant afford an extra $100 bucks gas or so per month to drive an SUV, how can they save money with another "free" vehicle.  My 1999 Honda costs virtually the same to insure as my Toyota truck that is a 2005. Then there is maintenence , license, registration costs etc.  People need to think about what is "free".

There's GOT to be a catch.

Beyond that, my question would be WHAT energy efficient car??

Brand new or some Citations they've got in mothballs??

At 6'6" you don't exactly fit into everything.

It is an interesting concept.

Perhaps FORD will pick it up, too!!!

I would do this if it were available here.  I have a large SUV for my very large family when I need to haul a boat or trailer.  More dealerships should do this.

They are also doing this in Arizona, one dealer is offering a 2008 PT Cruiser for a penny inf you buy one of their trucks or suvs. Now that is a deal worth looking at. I would take the PT and sell it for something that isn't so silly looking or just pocket the cash or use it to pay off my existing car loan.

just remember that you never get anything for free. whatever discount you could have gotten anyway, would have paid for the cheaper, supposedly free car. whynot just go in, pick out what you want....and...buy it    the economy could turn around overnight if everyone would quit letting the media scare them into not spending....people spending their money is what keeps the economy going...so get out there and....SPEND YOUR MONEY..... for the good of our countrys economy

RIDICULOUS!  Why does the public not realize when they're being duped?!  Perception is reality here and the public, along with the press' help, has a skewed awareness of what's really going on!  YOU'RE PAYING FOR BOTH VEHICLES!  Example....  Buy a new Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab and get a Dodge Caliber FREE!  Reality.....  Buy a new Dodge Ram, pay for a Caliber with the incentives and profit margin from the Ram!  Currently, Dodge Ram has up to eleven thousand dollars in incentives from the factory.  That, with the three to five thousand dollars in profit, can add up to over sixteen thousand in money you forfeit to the dealer.  You pay the MSRP amount of the Ram and you get a base, fourteen-fifteen thousand dollar, Caliber for "free"!  NOT a great deal people....  You're paying for BOTH!  Also, maybe the press should dig a little deeper before glorifying such "great" deals!
