Stupid ways people try to save money on gas

We've read about how more people are running out of gas on their way to wherever. Were they short on money for gas, or were they employing one of Punny Money's "5 incredibly stupid ways people are trying to save money on gas"?

The fact is, with gas at more than $4 a gallon, auto clubs all over the country are reporting an increase in calls from stranded travelers. Some truly didn't have enough money for gas. "A select few morons are even running out of fuel on purpose -- just to get that free gallon of gas their automotive club or roadside-assistance program provides to get them going again," writes Nick at Punny Money. He's right.

The Freeway Service Patrol in California says some people are abusing its help. The patrol provides a free gallon of gas to stranded drivers who were running on empty.

Central Penn Auto Club spokeswoman Cindy Brough told The Patriot-News in Harrisburg, Pa., that some stranded travelers expect a free tank of gas when they make a service call. But if you have only a basic AAA membership, you've got to pay for the gas that's delivered.

Among Nick's other stupid ways to save money on gas (click here to read his entire post and see his stickman cartoon):

Refilling as often as possible. This may be based on the erroneous belief that you'll save by keeping the gas in your tank from evaporating. Or, Nick says, maybe "it doesn't seem so bad when you're buying $5 or $10 worth of gas every other day instead of buying $50 worth of gas once a week."

Buying stuff to get free gas cards. "For example," Nick says, "buy $100 worth of jeans, get a $20 gas card. If you didn't actually need those $100 worth of jeans (or if you overpaid for them), then you just turned $4-a-gallon gas into $20-a-gallon gas."

trying you mass transit and only driving on the weekends. I use the Regional Transportion District in Denver,Colorado where I live and I enjoy riding the bus. I suggest only drive if you have no other option you know. have a good week everyone. From brad in colorado

Synthetic lubricants have been around for automobiles since 1972 but apparantly people are not familiar with the benefits of using the products.  Synthetics give better gas mileage because of less friction, less drag, less heat and less wear.  Less friction equates to better performance thus engines and gears don't have to work as hard as they do with petroleum.  Truckers using synthetics save thousands of dollars because of better mileage.  And changing oil and filters once a year compared to every 3,000 miles over 25,000 miles will save lots of money.  PLUS the major synthetic producer does not use any petroleum in their products but uses Esters which come from soybean and cotton seed and that is grown by the American farmer.

This is in response tro Morgan's post this evening at 8:22 pm.  I would be happy to show you how you can increase the mpg on your Cherokee as well as anyone else who wants to listen by using Synthetic Lubricants.  I have been using the products since 1972 with experience on the road and in short-track auto racing with NASCAR.

Here is a great way to save and every day I see the Einsteins of the highways taking advantage of this parctical concept.  Pull in right behind a semi truck and use the trucks draft in order to save.  Keep in mind that if it works at Daytona for your favorite NASCAR star, it has to work on the interstate, RIGHT?  Not only will you save fuel, but you will be saving your brakes when the the inbecile that just pasted you decides that if they are in front of a truck will become part of any slipstream the truck is making and maybe, just maybe the semi will give them a free bump to propel them to the next truck in order to do it all over.  The brake savings come from when you hit the trailer when the truck has to hit the brakes in order NOT to drive over the NITWIT that is in front.  Not only will you save brakes, but save on more fuel because you will not have to buy any anytime soon!!

Every car should be equipped with a meter to tell how many miles per gallon you are getting. My car is equipped with one and I realized I get better mileage at 60 mph than at 55 mph.It will teach some people how to conserve with being reckless and assinine while driving.

Well hey people, Look at it this way too.  I had injectors cleaned and a new fuel filter installed on my car. I use to get about 320 miles on my 96 seabring.. Now i get two hundred miles per tank of gas. This is sad because It doubles by gas.  I now have to fill up 2 times at least to get to work alone.  That 55 dollars each pop!  So honestly. If your paying 55 for a months worth of gas, Be happy with that. I mean honestly. And if it's that bad for you then consider using the big suburban for everything but commute to work etc.  And get your self a little puddle jumper like a little used escort. those little cars will get you where you need to go for cheap !!!  Ive seen alot of people doing this.. Stuck with there 12 mpg trucks so they get these little puddle jumper cars for 1000 bucks and drive them instead.  People honestly look out there, the cars now with lower MPG even the old ones the price has gone up.. I could have gotten one a yr ago for about a grand less.  This is for a very old very used car btw.

Now on the 45 mph dude on the expressway, and it's funny because Ive been stuck behind a prius that was doing like 47 in the left lane, Well I got on his a** and pushed him to the side. I mean , come on! .....  It's easy to get then to move, faster , slower faster slower. LOL ...  I duno in geneal gas sucks I once paid 189 for gas.. And now it just went below 4 dollars for this first time in a long freaking time.. so I am paying way more than i even imagined. check that diff out... Id be paying like 20 dollars for a tank of gas.. grrrr

I believe that the best gas mileage is related to be best efficiency the a car run.  This tends to be around 55 mph.  Plus this is the best place to create less smog.  Stick close to the speed limit sings, they will get you to your destination the fastest and most efficient.

Idiots! In 2006 I went out to buy a car. My neighbor thought I'd buy a Mercedes or BMW. I came home with a Toyota Corolla instead and the neighbor laughed. Well I laugh all the way to my credit union these days! I paid cash for the car which I was able to get for 14000.00. I average 35mpg city and highway and paid 0 interest.

My neighbor is clueless as he bought a F350 just to have a big truck. He gets about 5 to 7 mph the way he drives. He also paid 800k for his home one year ago which is next to mine. He does get a bit pissed when I tell him I paid under 100k (Cash) for mine in the mid 80's.

He also has about 20k in credit card debt. I keep mine paid off and use the cards to my advantage.

"Think of it this way -- a gallon of gas weighs a lot more than a gallon of water, and you know how heavy it is to lug a gallon of milk with your groceries.  Yes, your car is going to weigh more with a full tank of gas.  Instead of filling often, try filling when you need to and when you are passing a gas station on the way to your destination.  You know that 5 cents per gallon difference is not going to justify your driving 10 miles out of your way (because, face it, gas is now $4 per gallon; and your car probably does not average over 25 mpg).  Ten miles out of your way would equal 20 miles for a round trip.  Just do the math!

Sure keep your tank full, but don't bother waiting in line or idling your engine while waiting for a gas pump to free up.  Just try to fill up when your tank is 3/4 down or on its last 2 or 3 gallons.  Be sure to find out how much gas your car holds in its gas tank and check to see how close you were to ruining your gas pump -- which would cost you $200 to $500 to replace.  Try to use your common sense.  RMM"

NO MORON GAS WEIGHTS LESS MORON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

retired mechanic'scomments :

Clean your car: inside and out ,yourself if possible .Less weight consumes less fuel .

Reduce drag: wax your car ,properly inflate tires, roll up windows at highway speeds.

Maintain your car: a good runing chassis and engine perform and save.

computers and emission systems improve fuel milage: even your gas cap plays a role in sving fuel fumes to be burned at best times by the engine management system.

Drive smart: Smooth driving helps , avoid hard acceleration and avoin hard braking by watching everchanging trafic conditions.

plan trips:plan shopping trips to get more done with less trips, avoid left turns in tripplanning -less time at lights-combine several trips so the engine warms up once .
