50 reasons to stop using plastic shopping bags

"Fox" at Squawkfox has taken up a cause we can strongly embrace: "It's time to sack plastic bags."

Shouldn't we all, with the price of oil -- yes, they're made with oil -- and environmental worries, be moving to reusable shopping bags and bins? Plastic shopping bags are a blight, and they never -- for all practical purposes -- go away. "With few exceptions, plastic bags will take thousands of years to break down," Fox says. "The bag my first pair of shoes came in a couple decades ago is out there, somewhere."

Here are other good points to keep in mind (to read her entire list of 50 reasons, click here):

    • Cost. Some stores charge 5 cents for each bag your groceries are stuffed in. Some give you a 5- or 10-cent discount if you bring you own bag. By one estimate, it costs cities 17 cents to dispose of each bag.

    • Recycling is ineffective and rare. Fox says it costs $4,000 to process and recycle 1 ton of plastic bags. That ton will sell for $32. "This business model is a financial failure," she dryly observes.

    • They're everywhere, they're everywhere. Look outside and what do you see? "They are an eyesore and scar the landscape," Fox says. In fact, they're such a huge source of litter in Africa that entrepreneurs are collecting them and weaving them into bags and hats.

Like that cool site that tracks the growth of the U.S. national debt, Reusable Bags shows the growing number of plastic bags used around the world. It's almost 1 million every minute.

Considering the world produces 500 billion plastic bags a year and only %3 are ever recycled I think it's time we ALL used canvas bags before we are drowning in them. Up until the 1940's everyone brought thier own bags to shop.My grandmother did it and now I do it too. It's really not that much bother and there are some really cute ones out there to buy if you dont want plain canvas.

This is one small simple  thing EVERYONE can do. Even if you dont do any other type of recycling. It would be great some day to not see one flaping on a fence or choking sea life.

I'VE READ ALL OF THESE...AND I'M MORE CONFUSED THAN EVER!  WHAT'S THE "RIGHT THING" TO DO?

Thinking of ways to take care about our planet is the begining of the answer to the problems.  We will make mistakes but learn from them.  The answers will come.  Don't give up on us baby..

People just need to use their own bags period.  Buy your groceries, take them home however you can and that'll eliminate all the other problems.

    End of story.

how about we just stop making plastic bags altogether. it's just as easy as that.

Wow, and I've just found alot of ways to use those plastic bags. One of which is for when I take my pet out, nice clean up bag. I don't think it will go well in a paper bag. Does this also mean that trash liners will be a thing of the past too?

Whoever said a plastic bag lasts forever hasn't tried to pick up a garbage bag that has been left out in the sun for a few months.  The things fall apart and disintigrate into nothing.  Sad thing is we use plastic it uses up oil.  We use paper we are harming the forests.  We use cloth it takes more energy, ie oil or coal to produce the cloth especially if it is colored.  The dyes and chemicals used in producing that cloth hurt the environment.  We should just ban it all, and go naked...... but no one wants to see my wrinkled aging lily white glow in the dark white butt.

    Trees Grow, Dinosaurs Don't.

Plastic bags are not the ONLY item or product made with oil."ALL" plastic based products including garbage bags and bottles are made from oil. That's ONE reason items stored or packaged in plastic has gone sky high in price.

it's time to change US constitution and some laws ,coz some groups and ACLU and some so called civil rights leaders always ready to fly any where in country when you say NO to them or try to explain abt BAGS. i have seen some ppl ask for bags when they purchase small candy at party store zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, they ask for bag when they buy chips bags and so on ,if u look at them they act like they own this country and ppl OWE them ,lets pray to god that give them a brain
