50 reasons to stop using plastic shopping bags

"Fox" at Squawkfox has taken up a cause we can strongly embrace: "It's time to sack plastic bags."

Shouldn't we all, with the price of oil -- yes, they're made with oil -- and environmental worries, be moving to reusable shopping bags and bins? Plastic shopping bags are a blight, and they never -- for all practical purposes -- go away. "With few exceptions, plastic bags will take thousands of years to break down," Fox says. "The bag my first pair of shoes came in a couple decades ago is out there, somewhere."

Here are other good points to keep in mind (to read her entire list of 50 reasons, click here):

    • Cost. Some stores charge 5 cents for each bag your groceries are stuffed in. Some give you a 5- or 10-cent discount if you bring you own bag. By one estimate, it costs cities 17 cents to dispose of each bag.

    • Recycling is ineffective and rare. Fox says it costs $4,000 to process and recycle 1 ton of plastic bags. That ton will sell for $32. "This business model is a financial failure," she dryly observes.

    • They're everywhere, they're everywhere. Look outside and what do you see? "They are an eyesore and scar the landscape," Fox says. In fact, they're such a huge source of litter in Africa that entrepreneurs are collecting them and weaving them into bags and hats.

Like that cool site that tracks the growth of the U.S. national debt, Reusable Bags shows the growing number of plastic bags used around the world. It's almost 1 million every minute.

what is so difficult about switching to the canvas bags. Its really not that big of a deal to just do it. As we learn as a society what we are doing wrong, we shouldn't be so stubborn to change our habits a bit.

Probably already mentioned before, but every little bit helps.  We must use common sense to and discipline to help the environment.  With all you read, maybe some suggestions are not right, but some have to be.  Example, I live on a farm and have owned it 20 years now and I consistently every fall clean up trash I find that was thrown away back 40-60 years ago.  I have never thrown away a plastic bag and I still dig them up on this farm in a creek bed along with milk cartons and various other plastic items.  Guess what, they look just a new as the day they were thrown out.  One more thought, there is only so much on the planet, if not recycled or reused, what is next.  There is a finality to some things.

How Much Does Cost to make the Reuseable Bags???

    DEB

If only the government could step in and take control and provide the requisite laws to dictate how it is an individual is to conduct all facets of their life, it will be then and only then that we will truly be able to be free.

The global warming thing couldnlt have come at a better time.  What does Al Gore think about plasitic bags at the shopping market?  Oh I guess he doesn't shop...I bet Nancy Pelosi has a smart idea, has anybody asked her?

Right now, "GOING GREEN" is not a priority in this country unless it's green money coming in to pay for the groceries, the gas, the rent, keep people from losing their homes to foreclosure, pay for healthcare, electric bills...all these items have gone up and are going up.  These are issues the Presidential candidates should be addressing.  But whether to use plastic or paper or bring your own bag, much a do about nothing.

NO WAY OUT ??? HAVE WE GONE TOO FAR??? OUR GOV.WELL U NOT HELP US??????

It would be a great enviromental and financial savings if we entirely got away from plastic bag borrow millions of dollars from China to buy oil to burn, and waste the oil making plastic bags and other things things that can not be recycled only cost everyone in long run.  Paper bags are completely recycable and also a renewal productk oil is not renewable. Just in the last few months one of the large grocery chains Kroger has eleminated paper bags and gone to plastic where is their enviromental interest seems as they have none only interested in making more dollars at the cheapest way possible to heak with enviroment and saving americans money buy using less oil

Avoid Plastic bags as much as possible...be responsible in caring for the environment in ways that you can afford and can put into practice...Life is good, let's keep it that way for the future also...God is great and He would appreciate responsible stewards of His earth...

I like the idea of going back to glass.  Everything taste better from a glass and their safer.  As for packaging groceries, what was wrong with the old way, paper????? What or who started all this plastic business anyway...Nancy Pelosi???

Here is an idea lets put a tax on plastic bags and everything else made of plastic.

I mean that is the solution for everything right ?

Then the money can be put to use to stop global warming.

Or more likely end up in someones pocket.

I mean that is what the Green movement is about right ?

Controlling how people live and redistributing wealth.

Just another Green (Communist)  the World is ending post.
