Web site gives the insiders' view of major companies

Thanks to the Silicon Valley Blogger, we've found a fun -- and, she says, addictive -- new Web site called Glassdoor.com. You can find out from anonymous insiders what it's like to work at specific companies and see their ratings of the CEOs. And to make this site even more delicious, it lists the salary for lots of jobs.

For example, here's part of one anonymous employee's review of Office Depot:

Advice to management: Get a clue. Treat the employees like human beings. Respect + recognition = retention. The turnover in that place is so bad, it got to the point you wouldn't even introduce yourself to the new hires. Because you knew they would be quitting in a week.

The only catch is that to see all the reviews and salary information, you have to sign up (for free) and post a review of your current or former employer. (Some reviews and salaries are available for inspection without signing up, and the companies featured on the front page of the Web site rotate.) And you can read several at the Silicon Valley Blogger's post about Glassdoor at The Digerati Life.)

Glassdoor seems to be very interested in building the site. "We've already heard from over 40,000 employees at more than 11,000 companies in 76 countries, but we need your help to keep growing," the Web site says. "Post your review or salary, tell your friends, and/or join our employer advisors panel."

Whether you're looking for a job and want an up close and personal view of the corporate culture, or you already work for one of these companies and want to know what co-workers think or might be getting paid -- or you're just nosy -- this site is a  fascinating tool.

The site says it can also be a help to company bigwigs. "Although this might feel a bit uncomfortable at first, we think offering more transparency will have far-reaching benefits for everyone involved," it says on a page for employers.

Thanks for featuring my article!  Thought this new web 2.0 site would draw attention -- it certainly caught mine!

No, thank you for letting people expose sleezy companies like NetVersant while praising companies like BergElectric. On the restaurant note, Landry's Inc is by the wayside which include Rainforest Cafe & Aquarium (just to name a few) but places like the Hyatt are the best!
