Honey, someone shrunk the roll of Bounty

"LivingAlmostLarge" at the blog with the same name read an article about how manufacturers of food and sundry items are shrinking the size of their products and charging the same price. She found the proof in her own cupboards.

She wrote that "curiosity got the better of me and I started to pull through my cabinets.  And Bounty did decrease the roll size. I can say that because I have some from last summer." Bounty isn't the only product that's smaller now.

Our buddy Nickel at FiveCentNickel reported the same thing about ice cream: "I'm not sure if you've noticed, but over the past couple of years, 'half-gallon' ice cream containers have dropped from 2 quarts (an actual half-gallon) to 1.75 quarts to (most recently) 1.5 quarts. All without a price decrease."

According to an article in USA Today, that first drop in size happened five years ago. We didn't notice, and neither did LivingAlmostLarge and, we're sure, lots of other shoppers.

With companies dealing with higher energy and commodity prices, the article says, "Raising prices when strapped consumers are price-sensitive can be a formula for disaster. That's why there's often less in the box instead."

Other shrinking products include some brands of cereal, bar soap, snack foods and, yes, Bounty (a company spokeswoman said each sheet is now thicker and better). For more information about products that have been downsized, we recommend you read the entire USA Today story.

When consumers of Dreyer's ice cream complained, the company responded that it had to chose between a higher price -- $7 for a carton -- and a smaller container. Some unhappy customers will switch brands, but generally consumers prefer the latter, the article says. After all, how many people would pay $7 for ice cream?

We like LivingAlmostLarge's response: "I guess I'll be more aware now of the size of goods I am buying, even when on 'sale.'"

Well, at least this may be a way to get all these obese people to eat less!

For anyone who still "pickles"...a gallon of vinegar has been diluted to the point that you can't get the same effect with your pickling recipes.  And the price is up.

Pinar, I'm with you. It's a real pain to try to put together a recipe using bits from more than one container. Some recipes are fine with a little variation, but some aren't. Leaves us with the choice of having a partial container of something rotting in the fridge, waiting for the next recipe to use it up, or trying to scale the entire recipe to fit the lowest common denominator of ingredient container size. Add to this the insult of being taken to the cleaners by higher price-per-ounce by these manufacturers, and it makes think there are a lot of items I could live without buying from those manufacturers.

We've always been getting less for more. It's called business, inflation, the economy, etc. Me, I call it portion control, which according to records 70% of America needs it. You *** and moan now that junk food costs too much and you're getting less, but you'll be happy when you're healthier and living longer without diabetes and failing joints.

Some companies actual embrace this concept in their advertising, like it's a good thing.  I am sure everyone has hear Charmin' "Less is More" commercial.  They try to make the public believe that you can actually use less that you previously used, therefore, you are getting more.  In reality, you are getting less and paying more for it.

I have taken to purchasing items like cereal, toilet paper, paper towel, etc. at places like Sam's Club or Costco.  Why pay the huge price that grocery stores are charging on top of the smaller sizes the manufacturers are providing?

I don't see what everyone is complaining about.  In a world where everything is getting more expensive, as it has been doing ever since the dollar went off the gold standard, we expect our consumables to stay the same price.  Something has to give, either price goes up, or quantity goes down.

Besides, when it comes to food, especially indiviually wrapped items, the yogurt for example, think of it this way, they're just helping you lose weight.

Look at hamburger & hot-dog buns as well as brown & serve rools, they've all shrunk and yet the price continues to rise. Bread, cookies, eggs, you name it and the same thing has happened, the average person doesn't stand a chance in this world and yet what's so sad is that we coninue to vote the people into office that just stands there and allows this happen.

Check out not only the size of a roll of paper towels but also the length. Our paper towel holder will not hold our rolls anymore without falling out. I guess the paper towel dispenser company will have to shorten their product too!!

I well remember when bread was 5 cents a loaf, gasoline was 17.9 cents/gallon, and 1800 sq. ft. houses sold for $3,000.  There's a lot of greedy politicians in Washington, in our State government, in our County government and in City government, as well as much of the general population.   We have been a nation for over 200 years, and people just began to realize about 50 years ago that they could vote people in office that would give them things "free" (meaning that they would tax everyone and redistribute the money to those they had promised to give things "free").  This has escalated an economic collapse and it will probably come before I die.  Born in 1930.

I actually started to notice this "downsizing" several months ago when 51bs of sugar began to disappear from the shelves.  What really caught my attention though was when I bought my usual 200 pack of napkins and they were noticiably smaller and more narrow.  Another brand has actually changed from 200 to 160 I believe in their packages.  Will the dozen of eggs soon become 10 for the price of 12!? These are discouraging times in our Country.  I feel ripped off without a way to defend myself.
