Honey, someone shrunk the roll of Bounty

"LivingAlmostLarge" at the blog with the same name read an article about how manufacturers of food and sundry items are shrinking the size of their products and charging the same price. She found the proof in her own cupboards.

She wrote that "curiosity got the better of me and I started to pull through my cabinets.  And Bounty did decrease the roll size. I can say that because I have some from last summer." Bounty isn't the only product that's smaller now.

Our buddy Nickel at FiveCentNickel reported the same thing about ice cream: "I'm not sure if you've noticed, but over the past couple of years, 'half-gallon' ice cream containers have dropped from 2 quarts (an actual half-gallon) to 1.75 quarts to (most recently) 1.5 quarts. All without a price decrease."

According to an article in USA Today, that first drop in size happened five years ago. We didn't notice, and neither did LivingAlmostLarge and, we're sure, lots of other shoppers.

With companies dealing with higher energy and commodity prices, the article says, "Raising prices when strapped consumers are price-sensitive can be a formula for disaster. That's why there's often less in the box instead."

Other shrinking products include some brands of cereal, bar soap, snack foods and, yes, Bounty (a company spokeswoman said each sheet is now thicker and better). For more information about products that have been downsized, we recommend you read the entire USA Today story.

When consumers of Dreyer's ice cream complained, the company responded that it had to chose between a higher price -- $7 for a carton -- and a smaller container. Some unhappy customers will switch brands, but generally consumers prefer the latter, the article says. After all, how many people would pay $7 for ice cream?

We like LivingAlmostLarge's response: "I guess I'll be more aware now of the size of goods I am buying, even when on 'sale.'"

All you need to do to find out how much items have shrunk is try to use a recipe from years ago.  I can't even make my old lasagna recipe without having to buy two cartons of ricotta cheese since they've gotten an ounce smaller....

Everything is totally ridiculous. Prices just keep going up & up & up. Still working two jobs and cannot afford to buy food.  I feel sorry for people now a days with 2 & 3 children.  Very very sad world we live in.

Same thing with canned tuna.

Don't forget about the "2 liter" bottle of soda.  Now you can get a 1.5 liter for the same price as the old 2 liter.

How about chips? The bags are half full and they are smaller but the price is the same.

I have to hide them for lunches or they are gone in no time with the kids. Some products I will only buy if they are on sale.

have you noticed ice cream-from a half gallon box, to 1.75 gallon, and just recently purchased a 1.5 gallon container.  So that's from 2 full quarts to 1-1/2 quarts.

Also potato chip bags shrinking, & the sze of kleenex.

Watch for "new, improved" splashed across the package, or a re-designed package.  That's the tip-off-they think you'll notice the package & miss the less product/oz., etc.

Purina just did this in my area- a 50lb bag of dog food went to 44.1 lbs AND the price went up almost 2.00. I called and complained- that 6lbs per bag will cost me almost 8 weeks of dog food in a year-that is 8 more bags of food and 8 more trips to and from the store for it. They sent me a coupon for a free bag and 2.00 off 2 ore bags- small comensation for over 250.00 in extra expenses this year due to this!

Personally, i'd have rather kept my 50lb bag and paid another dollar.

I hadn't noticed the paper towels but the yogurt and ice cream..and coffee, too, and tuna is now in 5.5 oz. cans instead of the 6 oz..last year our Hill's Science Diet WD went from 10 lbs. to around 8.5 for practically the same price..you used to get 10 "fun size" candy bars for around a dollar..now you get eight..same price..and the rice cakes that come in two packs in a bag..you get seven cakes per pack instead of eight..I'm waiting for not-quite-half-gallons of milk..that's probably next! aarrggh! What's next? afraid to find out!

I have noticed a box of wine has shurnk in size -- well, they still say they are the same size, but if you take out the plastic bag the wine is in, you see it is only 3/4 full at the most!

Yep, the same is happening with washing powder.  They say they recreated the formula... but my clothes still smell the same as with the old formula.  Still the same clean if you ask me.  Then they say on the commericals to "use less."  Well, if the size of the box/liquid detergent has shrunk in size for the same price (and maybe a bit more) I have no other choice but to "use less"!!!

What a rip off!!!
