5 new uses for a gas-guzzling truck

Driving his pickup is now out of the question since $75 didn't even buy three-quarters of a tank -- and his plan to limit his driving to locations downhill from home has a serious flaw. So Kyle at Rather Be Shopping came up with "Frugality in practice (sorta): 5 great new uses for my truck."

No. 1 on the list is "storage, baby!" His pickup has a shell, which makes it perfect for storing the lawn mower and other things you'd normally keep in a shed. Bonus: The gas tank serves as a storage tank for fuel for the mower. (Honestly, folks, complaining about gas prices gets us nowhere, so we might as well have a few laughs.)

To read his complete post, click here, but in the meantime we'll share a few other clever suggestions:

Use it as an ice cream truck. Kyle jokes: "Potential problem: I would need to sell exactly 1,823 Otter Pops to pay for a tank of gas."

It's an "investment opportunity." Fill 'er up and park it, Kyle says. When gas hits $5.50 a gallon, siphon it and sell it to neighbors at a profit.

Our 2000 Chevy 20 Silverado truck is the only one of our four vehicles that uses regular gas, but it also gets the lowest gas mileage. We have limited its use to making the monthly trip to the garbage dump/recycling station (we live in a rural area with no trash pickup), picking up purchases at the home improvement stores, and trailering our pleasure boat to a nearby boat launch. When winter comes we will depend on the four-wheel drive to get us through the snow to the grocery store. We are a retired couple who are staying close to home this summer, forgoing our annual trip in our sedan (Mid-grade gas) to our home state of New York.
