101 money-saving tips from the village idiot

You're brown-bagging your lunch, driving less and clipping more coupons, but you're still not cutting expenses enough to compensate for higher gas and food prices. That's a common lament of many of our readers, who often ask, "Isn't there more I can do?"

Hopefully you can find some inspiration in "101 ways I saved money this year" by "The Village Idiot" at an entertaining blog called Save, You Fool!

He tosses in a couple zingers. No. 42 is "Stopped tipping strippers," and No. 102 is "(and one more since No. 42 may be too hard to do) Bought a generic brand of printer toner." Since No. 42 doesn't count, we figure it's there to make sure we're still paying attention.

Most of the rest are sound tips that, if applied religiously, could contribute to a substantial amount of savings.

He also painted the spare bedroom and fixed the sink, rather than hiring someone to do it; disputed incorrect cell phone charges; borrowed a movie from the library; and got a higher deductible on the car insurance.

He's making a mortgage payment every two weeks. (We hope he's doing that on his own, rather than paying the bank a fee to set up biweekly payments.) He haggled on the price of a new car. (We hope it was a new-to-him car.) He's also washing it himself.

Glad you found the "101 Ways I Saved Money This Year" post useful enough to share with your readers. It was tough at times (especially no. 42 ;) but it saved me hundreds of dollars when all was said and done.
