Sneaking candy into the theater: Frugal or cheap?

It's once again time to take a break from the heavier issues of the day, and "Frugal Dad" gave us the respite we were looking for. Ponder this one: Is sneaking your own candy into the movie theater frugal or cheap?

This is an academic exercise for us because we don't really care for movie theater candy. (We've got our eye on the popcorn with extra butter.) But it's a real-life decision for Frugal Dad, and you might be surprised at the decision he reached.

Frugal Dad originally floated this question in a forum at our partner blog Wise Bread. He described how he'd gone to the $1-a-box aisle at a discount store to stock up before going to see the film. His wife called him cheap.

"Normally, I would thank her for the compliment, but this time her comment had me thinking," Frugal Dad said.

Readers had varying opinions, both at Wise Bread and at Frugal Dad's site, and some are very entertaining. Of course, frugalists suggested he rent the DVD and watch the movie at home.

We tend to agree with Elliott of 21st Century Dad, who said, "It's a cheapskate move for sure. It's like bringing your own food to a restaurant."

Frugal Dad decided that it's not only cheap but possibly illegal to sneak your own candy inside. We are capitalists, after all, he said, and the theater owner has the right to make money from candy sales.

If you want to save money, don't eat the candy. If you can afford it, go ahead and live large. "In the grand scheme of things, a box or two of movie candy or a large tub of popcorn is really not going to make or break us," he said.

I don't see the point in buying the over prized candy.

THere is not much variety anyway.

I want healthy snacks. ALl they have  is instant diabetes things.

Why, I ask , do I not have the right to choose my own food?

I don't like soda. SO why do I have to pay 2 $ more for a little bottle of water?

If they start carrying healthy things like low fat popcorn or granola bars and charge the  appropriate amount for it and not their phantasie prizes I will buy it.

But as long as they try to force me to eat unhealthy just so they can squeeze more money out of me,  I will bring my own food.

I hate fountain soda. They have a soda machine inside the theater where they charge $4.50 for a bottle or I can get one out of the machine outside for $1.50. I don't buy candy at the theater as it is so marked up and ususally no good anyway. In my college days we would always sneak our own stuff in. Now I don't as I don't eat that much candy but if I did want some I would not buy it there. I do get the little kids pack for my son though which is a little bag of popcorn, a drink and a pack of candy and that is a reasonably priced little treat for my kid. But as mentioned, with the price of tickets and then factoring in the treats it is way too expensive and they come out so quick on DVD now you may as well wait. We only go when it is a movie that just has to be seen at the theater!

No offence, but most of you "commenteers" are most likely above the teenage years. I on the other side of the age spectrum am a 15 year old. I personally, since the age of 10, have snuck in items and beverages such as chips, water, candy, and anything else the nearby gas station foodmart holds. My cousin and I have even snuck in a whopper meal from Carl's Jr., from the burger to the fries, (laugh out loud) lol. Anyway it may not be legal to sneak in these scrumptious "out of theater" snacks to the walls within, but it's not cheap, it's smart, why pay the mark ups of 200 - 400% on items, when you can buy them elsewhere for a buck? Im sorry, but the owners of these theaters need to understand that young persons entering the cinema atmosphere can't afford the extreme prices, the ticket stub is expensive enough.

And responding to a comment made by someone, bringing your own food to the theater is not like bringing your own food to a restaurant, it's like bringing your own knife and fork, you don't have to use them, but you clearly want to.

I would sneak everyting into the movies.  Their prices are absolutely rediculous. If people would not purchase anything for awhile, maybe the prices would go down.  I can't even afford the price of a ticket, so iI pop my own popcorn & stay home to watch movies.

Not sneaking in your own candy would be un-American.

Cheap would be sneaking into a double feature.

Bringing candy to the theater?? Go for it!! I hate buying food at movie theaters. You get a nice big box with a nice big label of the candy you want--- you open it up, and there's a tiny plastic back that fills the box up 1/3 of the way full. That's not fun, or fair, at 4 dollars a pop.

I don't consider it neither cheap or frugal, candy is just too overpriced at theater, same as popcorn. We always share popcorn, but when we file like eating candy we buy it at a drugstore in the same mall the theater is. And we also don't like any of the candy they sell...

I was laughing at the statement's when he said "it is like take your own food to a restaurant" and "it's possibly illegal". Oh come on. Are you kidding me. You go to a movie to watch the movie. You go to a restaurant to eat food. Illegal? Why? How could something like bringing in you own food be illegal?

Does this guy have any idea what reality is?

For at least 30 years I have carried in my own candy, but I do buy a soda.

My brothers in a wheelchair and we use him as cover to sneak in just about everything , from sodas to candy to popcorn and nachos at times... makes more sense then payying those HIGH prices.
